Wimpole Hall Try-O event

It was good to have so many newcomers of all ages on all the courses the event was planned for you! However a lot of experienced orienteers still found the Red course quite a challenge. Dan Buckley the course planner did well to exploit the areas available to suit the different standards. Bruce Marshall having fulfilled his duties as controller ably switched start minder - well done Bruce! We hadn't bargained for the occupants of the start field being quite so possessive one of our map boards still has horse's teeth marks!
We were lucky that the rain forecast for Sunday got delayed till Monday so that we could enjoy Wimpole Hall and its grounds in the sunshine. WAOC would like to thank the National Trust for letting us use this area and, in particular, Graham Damant, the Estate Manager, for his help and advice. I know many of us enjoyed the luxury of on-site refreshments afterwards.
Thanks also to the many WAOC members who gave there time to help make this a successful event.
If you enjoyed this event why not join us at Rowney Warren on 27 October where you can run in a very different area of varied woodland on the paths or through the trees! And if you join WAOC you can get cheaper entries to this and other events. We hope to see you again!
Roger Horton
It was an interesting day for me as a controller. Of course, I had an early run to ensure that all the controls were correctly set up. But that was only a part of my Sunday.
The two black horses which had chewed control flag 202 overnight took a great interest in control 201. I managed to put the flag the other side of the wire out of reach. This meant that other pieces of equipment were now of more interest and I then spent the next hour and a half keeping that damn horse from spoiling your start.
Maybe because of that, I didn't notice that someone had not secured a gate into the field, with the result that a herd of cows escaped into our field at about 12:20. I did ask most people to close gates after them. It's mistakes like this which jeopardise relations with our generous landowners.
Thanks to Dan for planning the courses, Alison for staging the string course and Roger who stepped in at short notice to be Organiser.
