My thanks to all those who helped, particularly those who fixed tempramental
laptops - not my strong point! Also to those who gave up their maps or had to
use second hand maps, as we slightly under-estimated the turnout at the
event.
On that score we used a fairly 'lean' system not requiring a huge number of
helpers, so I hope the self selecting start times were OK for you. We didn't
expect a huge number of competitors, and in these days of declining numbers it
was nice to be proved slightly wrong. Also I hope the very pleasant weather (not
my doing) made up for the brambles and nettles in places.
Thanks too to the farmers, Mr & Mrs Hare who allowed us to run power from
their barn, thereby saving my car battery!
Chris Brown (WAOC)
First of all, I need to say thank you to a lot of people who helped me make
the planning of this event go smoothly. Many thanks to Bruce for being such a
supportive controller, making very sensible suggestions for changes to me, a
not-so-experienced planner, at several stages of my course planning. Thanks to
Bruce also for the help with the extensive re-mapping of the area prior to the
event, and for being willing to help by organising the collection of controls at
the end of the day. Thanks also to Mark Collis who taught me some of the basics
of mapping so I wouldn’t have to start ‘at the deep end’ with Rowney Wood,
as well as for helping me work out the intricacies of the SI equipment when, a
couple of days before the event, I simply couldn’t figure out how it was
supposed to work. Not in the least, thanks to my Mum who is always very
supportive when I’m trying to sort through the last bits of planning an event
– sorting out kites, stakes, numbers, sometimes putting out and taking in
controls, and all those other seemingly little bits without which, nevertheless,
the event wouldn’t happen. And of course all you lot who came to run at Rowney
and hopefully had an enjoyable day…
This was the first time Rowney Wood was used for a colour coded event and I knew
when I took on the job of planning there that it would be very brambly to say
the least. Having spent a lot of time getting to know the wood when re-mapping
it (and getting frightened by pheasants jumping out in front of me numerous
times!), I tried to take your courses, especially the longer ones, at least
partly through the nicer (relatively) bits of the wood. Obviously, going through
some (a lot) of the brambles was unavoidable though…
During the three weeks between me being out in the wood and the day before the
event, the nettles seem to have come up quite significantly. I was particularly
worried about competitors on the Orange course between numbers 122 and 128 – I
hope the nettles weren’t too bad. Competitors on both Yellow and White courses
inevitably went though the ‘star’ junction, which can sometimes confuse even
experienced orienteers on the longer courses, especially after forgetting the
direction where you came from. I’ve tried making the route choice quite
obvious by placing the control in a suitable corner of the junction, so
hopefully most of you will have found the right way out of this rather complex
junction.
