Everything was on my side for this event. The weather was perfect on the day, and also had been dry enough beforehand to allay any fears of parking becoming difficult on the grass. I apologise to the very last finishers who may have found there was no water left for drinks- Chicksands is a long way from a tap!
I was pleased with the turnout, which included several families and individuals new to the sport. I hope you enjoyed your experience and that we see you again at future events.
Rolf made life easy for me, especially by providing a very compact siting of the Start and Finish.
I had a brand new contact list to help me find all the helpers I needed at quite short notice. As ever, the success of the event depends on all those who agreed to help in advance. Many helpers are involved at registration, where we aim to allocate start times to separate out entrants on each course by a suitable margin. This is intended to avoid queues at the start, space people out so the first legs do not become crowded, and also gives the results team a chance to enter your details into the computer before you finish. I believe this extra effort is justified, but does require us all to observe the allocated start times and so please do note Keith’s comments!
This aside, the day seemed to go very well. I hope it did for you also.
Peter Woods (WAOC)
I'd like to thank controller Keith Downing for his valuable advice and
understanding when I made numerous course changes including the start. I'd like
to thank organiser Peter Woods and the efficient team he assembled. I'd also
like to thank Fred Northrop who sorted the maps, forester Steve Knight, and
Forest Enterprise. And thanks to everyone who turned up, as that's what makes
the planners job worthwhile.
I understand there was some confusion at the start. A few competitors mistook
the first control on the white course for the start kite. I agree that they were
rather close and that was something I hadn't considered when planning. Sorry
about that.
I positioned the start and finish further into the forest than in previous
years. This was to take the white and yellow through the more interesting and
scenic parts of the forest. I like to position the start, finish, and download
nearby whenever possible.
Longer courses visited all parts of this small forest. I tried to keep you off
the paths. Some parts of the forest were a bit thick, and I think that accounts
for the longer course times. Possibilities for long route choice legs were
rather stifled by the extensive path network and the isolated OOB areas. And of
course, I avoided the worst of the thorn bushes! Hope you enjoyed your run.
Rolf Crook (WAOC)
Every controller dreams of an event where all the hard work is done by the planner, every control site can be trusted as being totally reliable and all they have to do is make a profound comment to show they are paying attention and then stay in bed for a leisurely lie-in on the day of the event – oh, and have a bright sunny day with blankets of spring flowers. This was the nearest I’ve come to it. Rolf worked hard to squeeze some intricate courses in to the small area of Chicksands which was made much more difficult due to the dense track network.
I think most of you will agree that his courses got it just about right, although the spread of times from first to last in each course was extremely wide. I was a bit concerned that Orange and Red might have appeared a bit difficult to less experienced competitors, but the courses complied with every aspect of the guidelines. E-punching might have come as a surprise to some of you but allows the maximum benefit to be squeezed out of a small area.
Unfortunately it also presents other opportunities for people to stretch the system and cause problems they probably never thought about.
In particular, some people managed to lose track of time on the shortest of possible walks to the start, probably because they thought that with a punching start it didn’t matter. The rules state that competitors should start with one minute between them and if this had been enforced, some of you would have had to wait at least 20 minutes or even more. Even though the start team did not try to enforce this, it did put unnecessary pressure on the small team who have enough to do in the normal sequence of events without having to cope with the extra problems of late starters who were blissfully unaware of the chaos they were causing. Be warned, you might not always be treated so leniently.
