| Shortcuts to courses: | Ochre, Maroon, Navy, Chocolate |
During the day, a significant part of Therfield Heath is out of bounds as it
is used as a golf course, but many of these restrictions can be lifted at night,
and this makes planning of suitable courses easier. The courses were
confined to the eastern (and largely open) part of the map to avoid a road
crossing, but this led to the use of a second master map for the Chocolate
course. Despite the open character of the heath, I hope that everyone who
took part in this event found the courses satisfying and enjoyed their runs.
Finally, I would like to thank Andrew for his helpful comments on my proposed
courses, Ursula for keeping me on target, and Rolf, Bruce and Maria for their
help in collecting the controls after the event.
Chris Page (WAOC)
Organising a WAOC event is a breeze because club members are always willing
to help. On this occasion everyone I asked said 'yes' and Bruce and Maria
volunteered without being asked. Many thanks to Rolf and Roger who ran the
start, to Bruce who helped on the finish and to Maria who helped put the tent
up, mended the table, provided the float when I had forgotten to get one, sorted
out registration and then manned the finish timer. What did I do? - well
you may ask.
This is the first occasion on which I have both supplied the food for and
organised a night event and it placed enormous strain on my distinctly limited
organisational resources. As always, Ron was an enormous help at the home
end; it is just a pity that we neither of us thought to check the gas cylinders
before I set out. Sorry about the soup.
One competitor did not punch his control card at the 2nd master maps - there is
nearly always someone. On this occasion I did not disqualify him, but
other organisers might not be as lenient another time, so be warned.
Many thanks to Andrew Cordle, our capable controller, for his calm approach and
kind comments.
Ursula Oxburgh (WAOC)
Controlling this event was a real pleasure. The ground bore a close resemblance to the map, the WAOC just-in-time map printing allowed some minor changes to make the resemblance even closer, Chris's courses were of the right standard and his preparations for the event were flawless, and Ursula and her team's organisation went smoothly as usual. Even the weather was good. The biggest plus was that all the competitors seem to have enjoyed themselves! Being unable to find anything to help with or criticise on the night, I had time to see how many controls I could find without using either a map or a light, as well as being able to make a dream announcement - "If anyone needs the Controller, you'll find him in the bar!"
