Having been on the receiving end of the variations of runnability of Maulden
Woods at many of the previous events held here, it made a change to try and have
some influence on which parts were visited. This was my first event on the
organising side using electronic punching. One of the benefits of the WAOC
system of putting on Colour coded events with premarked maps which have been
preprinted the week before is that it allows the incorporation of changes to the
basic map so the map you see is up to date.
Adrian gave all courses a good sight of the differences of runnability through
the wood, from those on the senior courses with the fast pine with little
undergrowth to the bramble and tall grass blocks needing a high foot lift. It
was the junior courses with hard grass rides and the shoe-sucking mud towards
the finish that caused the most complaints. For those of you looking for less
muddy conditions, I am led to believe that it does not get much better at the
height of summer.
The Orange Course seems to have been the one where some more attention was
required as the winning time was too long; but on the Brown I understand the
quickest way from the Clearing 138 to the Fence East End was up the slope and up
the line of tree planting on to the end of the fence rather taking the safe
route around the path.
Having been at the Event the previous weekend where Dave Wotton died, I hope
this event was suitable tribute to a person I have spoken to, as you do at
events through this side of event organising, or standing at the start waiting
for the off but not necessarily finding out who they are until much later. So if
you entered this event as an Independent and enjoyed it, join the sport via a
local club and get as much as Dave did from Orienteering.
Roger Williams (SMOC)
I began the planner’s journey having only walked and cycled through a small part of the woods last summer, with my family, without an ‘O’ map. So the first task was to become familiar with the whole area from a dated map. Numerous versions followed as Bruce Marshall found time to update the map. Previous attempts at planning in Canada and Sussex had left me with the impression that planning followed map drawing. I now see how the two can work in harmony in this modern age of computerised maps. After numerous visits to the woods with the family I was finally in a position to draft out some courses. Later, hanging ribbons took place during record rainfall, when paths turned to streams. After gratefully received constructive feedback from the Controller, Roger Williams, and Bruce, the courses finally went to Fred Northrop to be printed out and reproduced. Finally, I spent a novel 3 hours with Bruce in Cambridge programming the SI units, on Friday, and shared the positioning of 46 controls before the event with Bruce (which I am glad I had reduced from nearly 60 on the initial draft courses). Thanks Bruce for all your support.
From direct and indirect comments, and a quick look at the results displayed, the courses seemed to be well received despite the muddy conditions in places. I hope the final leg didn’t leave a lasting dirty impression for the White, Yellow and Orange participants. The White and Yellow courses appeared just right, but the Orange, Light Green and Red may have involved slightly more technical challenge then expected. There were few non-finishers, so at least people stuck with it, and got value for money. There are so many distinct re-location features in Maulden that it was difficult for anyone with basic map reading skills to get seriously lost. The challenge was to give the more experienced orienteers lots of route choice and test both physical and mental capability, without getting scratched to pieces in the more hostile areas. While some path running was inevitable, the comments offered indicated that I managed to achieve a reasonable mixture of mental and physical challenge, inevitably made easier with the use of the SI units. Hope you all enjoyed your courses, and many thanks for showing up in such large numbers to make all the hours worthwhile.
Many thanks to Roger, Bruce and Bill (on the day) for ensuring a high quality WAOC event.
Adrian Taylor (WAOC)
First, I must say a heartfelt 'Thank you' to the members of the SI teams into
whose capable hands I passed the setting-up of the SI system, entering the
registrations and everything thereafter. In particular, I want to thank Bruce
Marshall (a wizard with recalcitrant SI boxes) and Neil Humphries who led the
first SI team and set everything up.
Thank you too, to all the other helpers, who agreed so readily to man the car parking, registrations, start and finish - and did so with great efficiency. Car Parking is always tight at Maulden and this year was no exception. Fortunately, just as we were reduced to the last two or three slots, new arrivals dried up and all was well. An instruction to someone arriving to 'go away and come back in half an hour' might not have been well received!
Adrian's courses seemed to be well enjoyed by the participants and Roger William's oversaw the whole event with great thoroughness - my thanks to both of you. Maria Marshall’s String Course was much appreciated by the very young - and not so very young. Finally, thank you to Peter, for help beyond the call of duty - it is I that volunteer to 'organise', but he always turns out on the day (and compiled the results booklet!)
