It was very pleasing to see so many orienteers taking part at this event and for us to be so ably assisted by our helpers. We hope you all enjoyed the day as much as we did. Our excellent band of helpers were Rolf Crook on registration, Bruce and Maria Marshall on start and the Louth family (Caroline, Graham, Edward, Sophie, Thomas and William) on finish. Thanks to Ursula for putting together such a well appreciated collection of courses and to Neil for his meticulous attention to every last detail. Thanks!

Planner's comments

I hope you enjoyed your course at Ampthill, and that you took a minute or two to enjoy the superlative blackberries, very helpfully mapped as 'Seasonal Undergrowth, Variable Access'. I spent a delightful couple of days there, checking and tagging control sites and noting changed paths, vegetation, pits etc. for the map corrections. By then I had a reasonable idea of where the worst of the brambles, nettles and bracken were and tried to plan courses to keep you out of them as much as possible - as is often the case with WAOC areas, the bits of wood are lovely - just a pity that they are not bigger!

It had been my hope to make use of my very basic OCAD skills to produce an up-to-date map which could then have been laser-printed for you, but when rather late on I discovered that we still had 200 copies of our 1996 print run of Ampthill, I decided to make use of these, with the registration team making the map corrections for the White and Yellow courses. I hope that you were not too much disadvantaged by the many minor changes which have occurred over the last 5 years which could not be incorporated into the map corrections.

We had an unexpectedly good turnout for a Come And Try It event, including orienteers from Derwent Valley and Coventry. I had not expected so many people to want to run Light Green and apologise for not producing enough printed control descriptions.

A SPECIAL MESSAGE TO THE JUNIORS. It was lovely to see from the Results how many of you there were and how well you all did.

Brown Only Line Course:

I knew that I needed to plan a challenge course and spent some time deciding on the best format for one. Ampthill is one of our few areas with sufficient contours to make Brown Only courses worthwhile. I decided to try a Line because I hoped to steer you away from the woman-eating rhododendron/bramble combination which has engulfed me on previous Brown Only courses at Ampthill. With only a B&W printer, minimal OCAD expertise and finite time I was not able to generate printed Line maps, which had been my intention. Thank you for your good nature in copying down your line yourselves - always an unsatisfactory option for any line course.

The line went through 8 brown control features and 6 additional non-brown controls. I established this by holding my line map up to the light with my printout of All Controls behind it! Having established a complete list of the controls you should have visited, I spent an interesting time checking the punchings on your cards and working out how best to score the course. In the end I decided to consider only the brown feature controls, as punching of non-brown ones was extremely variable, and I could see no reasonable way of scoring if I included non-brown controls.

There were a couple of controls on brown features which were not on the line, and I reckon that punching these has to be penalised. The first one was on a knoll (Kn) just N of a small earthbank on a spur - the line left the spur at the earthbank and did not go over the knoll. The second one was on the most northerly of a series of platforms (Pl) on a north-facing spur - the line went through a small earthbank at the top of the spur.

The winner was undisputed, as he found 5 non-brown controls as well as all 8 brown, but I am still not sure whether to put Lindsey at 3 or 7!
