After positioning the start and finish in the open, I divided the map into three areas, each encompassing different terrain. All the courses went to the north east with dense vegetation and a good ditch network. Most the courses went to the west where varied vegetation and a few point features called for more careful navigation. I took as many courses as possible to the south to explore the numerous reentrants and holly bushes. Unfortunately, the frequent paths throughout Maulden Woods somewhat spoils the fun.
SI electronic punching again proved successful and popular, and this time with a large rucksack, I found it possible to carry about 15 controls at a time. Control 113 was temporarily, mysteriously repositioned, but within sight of its correct spur. Some of the numbers blew off, which was my mistake. I took advantage of the electronic punching to continue the trend of reducing the control count. This reduces the workload for the planner and potentially leads to more route choice for the competitor. Inevitably there will be more or longer long legs. The brown course was squeezed onto a single map; this seemed to work, and reduced printing costs.
I'd like to thank my controller Norman King for solid advice with his relaxed, helpful attitude. Thanks are also due to Fred and Dave for their patience, as the map printing got postponed to the last print day before the event. This was to accommodate a change of symbol size. The organization was very slick, thanks to Tony Wilson, the Marshall family, and all those who helped on the day. I was particularly impressed by the unmanned electronic finish as the numbers thinned later in the day (help was still available at the download tent). Thanks for running through Maulden Woods.

After such a prolonged spell of wet weather it came as a great relief to find the forecast was correct for once and Sunday turned out to be for the most part pleasantly sunny, making, I hope, a pleasant run for all and a rewarding day for all those involved in making it happen. The morning started windy and putting up the tent at 7:30 proved to be a bit of a struggle. I had nightmare visions of the tent taking off during the day, which with all the SI equipment could have led to disaster, but fortunately there were secure fences to tie it down to. Come start time the wind had dropped to more of a breeze, so that concern went away.
A fair size group of very serious looking twitchers arriving fairly early on then gave me worries of possible confrontation but they asked if there were areas where we wouldn't be running and then proceeded into the woods apparently not too concerned. Upon their departure a couple of hours later they seemed happy enough - evidence I hope that Orienteering doesn't cause too much disturbance to the local wildlife.
SI punching certainly brings a number of changes which will take some getting used to - but changes which must be good for the competitor and certainly make the Organiser's job easier, like a much simpler Start set-up without the need for synchronised clocks and a virtually unmanned Finish (which in effect is now just another control). It also relieves the Organiser of the task of checking and entering the results, enabling instant results and instant printout of split times - good for those discussions immediately after finishing with fellow competitors of what went wrong where, etc.
Many thanks to all those helping on the day, who made my day easy by just getting on with their allotted activities without fuss and hopefully then still finding time to get in a run.

Well, in the last 12 years of Orienteering in East Anglia this was my first visit to Maulden Woods. I was pleasantly surprised at the contours and challenges in the South of the map. I keep forgetting there are hills in East Anglia. I also enjoyed the West part of the map which it was possible to run direct to controls. I visited the controls 4 times and always experienced something new, to see the deer at 8am in the morning brings you back to reality and lets you forget the "rat race" for a few hours. Over the weeks the rain came and each visit saw the streams rising and the dry depressions becoming wetter. By race day depression 141 was overflowing and the control had to be hung North of the ditch, if Rolf had hung it as marked you would all have been in 3 foot of water. Luckily for the younger competitors this did not affect them.
Many thanks for all the positive comments we received. I know Rolf worked hard on his courses and thanks to him for the excellent courses he planned. The only complaint we received was on the Brown Course where control 116 (16 for Brown) could appear like a number 6. One competitor ran from 5 to 16 and realised "his error" when he got there. We thought long and hard about using 1:10,000 circles or 1:15,000 circles and opted for 1:10,000. I saw the maps at 1:10,000 circles so I can only apologise if it spoiled your run.
I am a big fan of SI and could see on the day how much manpower it can save a club. One thing I had not considered is that SI also keeps you quickly up to date on who is out on the courses. As long as everybody has downloaded then it is a bonus for the Organiser and Controller alike. I hope you are all getting used to SI and I look forward to using it again.
