Shortcuts to courses: White, Yellow, Orange, Map Memory,
My first attempt at organising an event seemed to work quite well. It is surprisingly easy. I even arranged some good weather! (at least until controls were collected). Many thanks to everyone who helped on the day, especially my dad for doing various organiser-type things while I moved to London, and for having a car. There were several very positive comments from finishers, I hope that everyone enjoyed the day this much.
Steven Lawson (WAOC)
I have often come home from events and indulged my habit of redesigning the course I'd run to avoid the control visible from 100m away, the bingo control and to add some more route course. Now for the first time I've been on the other side of the fence, and stare at my courses wondering what other people are doing to them !
I certainly now understand the assertion that the most junior courses are the hardest to plan given the 'rules' about control sitings. Within the confines of Priory Park the Orange course was much easier to plan than the White and Yellow. It would have been possible to make the Map Memory course a little more 'devious', but hopefully the experienced orienteers who tried it found it a pleasant way to stretch their legs on a pleasant morning. Unfortunately one map was lost to vandalism, but the people whose run was spoilt were understanding about the sad but inevitable risk of vandalism.
I must record my thanks to Janet Biggs for carefully monitoring my first attempt at planning.
Ian Smith (WAOC)
Thank you for inviting me to control this informal, "come and try it". I enjoyed my visits to Priory Park and I hope those new to orienteering had an interesting and successful day. Please come again! Better still, join your local club to get the best out of the sport.
It was a great pity that one of the maps for the map memory course was removed by a vandal. This type of behaviour is all too prevalent in the parks used by my own club. I hope those competitors who were affected still managed to get some enjoyment out of the event. Because of family commitments I had to leave before the close but, I guess the last few finishers may have got a little wet. Steven did very well organising the event. I was impressed by the number of willing and able helpers who came along. I felt Ian's courses were ideal for the event although much of the grass had been cut down. This made the early controls on the White and Yellow very visible but it should have added to the excitement for the younger orienteers. For the more experienced, the event should have proved a good shake-down for the coming season.
