Shortcuts to courses: String, White, Yellow, Orange, Red, Light Green, Green, Blue
I hope that you enjoyed Jeff's courses. A few people said that their course took them to more runnable parts than they recalled from previous events.
Several competitors had a problem with No. 10 on the Blue Course (control 226). In most cases the person had failed to pick up control descriptions for part 2 at the map exchange. I checked personally during the event and there were always control descriptions hanging at low level just behind the part 2 maps. I realise that in the heat of the race, it was easy to overlook them. For most controls, not having control descriptions did not present a problem, but unfortunately No. 10 was waiting to catch out the unwary. When aiming off to approach No. 10, most people would see control 240 first. This was on the "NE ditch junction" 50 metres to the north east of control 226 and was used by the Green Course in the opposite direction. Control 240 must have looked similar, even though there were two large tributary ditches heading south instead of one ditch heading west at 226. In retrospect, we could have handed out parts 1& 2 control descriptions at Registration, even though some part 2 controls were on feasible part 1 routes. I hope that it did not spoil your day.
Hedley Calderbank (HH)
This was my first attempt at planning an event and I enjoyed the experience, despite it involving a lot more work than I envisaged. Chicksands is quite a small area and with the additional OOB constraints this year, it was quite a challenge fitting all the courses in whilst trying to avoid "dog-legs". Only the Blue course seemed to suffer under these constraints but I agree with Hedley's comments.
Last year the event was held a couple of weeks later in May when the bluebells were over and the nettles were twice as tall, so I think the event benefited from the earlier date. I hope this made up for some of the grottier areas I was forced to take some courses through.
My apologies to competitors who registered early and had to wait for their control descriptions, I was in the forest sorting out the second master maps while the control descriptions were sat in the boot of my car!
I would like to thank Bruce Marshall for his comments in the early stages, Hedley Calderbank for his guidance and suggestions, Fred and Neil Northrop for their help with the re-mapping and Jen Woodward for constructing 46 controls on Saturday evening while getting bitten by forest insects.
Jeff Green (WAOC)
Having been a Planner several times this was my first attempt at Organising; it was certainly an interesting experience. I had never appreciated what a help it is if people volunteer their services before the event without being asked.
Many thanks to all the WAOC members who helped with the various tasks that are required to be able to put on a Colour Coded event, especially my family for being ‘multi-tasking’ with their help.
My main concern before the event was the car parking. When I visited the wood 7 days before the event most of the parking area had water lying on it and I was wondering just how far down the main track we would have to go to fit everybody in. Thankfully, although there was not as much sun to dry the ground out as I would have liked, the rain largely stayed away and the ground drained better than I had expected.
The use of premarked maps is much liked by competitors but trying to judge the numbers required (thus keeping wastage down) is difficult (is it an art or a science?). Many thanks to those competitors who allowed us to reuse their maps when the Blue course maps ran out. A replacement set should have been sent with these results but if you have not received them please contact me and I will send you a set.
