Shortcuts to courses: String, White, Yellow, Orange, Red, Light Green, Green, Blue, Brown
I must thank the weather as well as all those cajoled into helping when many of our stalwarts were at the National Event: especially as we were a couple of helpers short most of the time. Those coping with car parking and apparently abandoned on road crossings have the most difficult job. The change in hour didn't help as the flood of entries continued till after midday.
Pre-marked maps of the quality we issue are ideal for orienteerers but try relieving competitors of their maps at the finish! We are very grateful for those who could selflessly bring themselves to part with their maps at the finish and we were able to supply everyone with a map for their course if not to take home.
Mike Bickle (WAOC)
Most of the course planning was in fact done by my son, Neil, who didn't go anywhere near Thetford on the day, but went to the National Event at Brown Clee Hill instead. I therefore found myself putting out controls at dawn on a bright but frosty morning, which was actually a most pleasant and enjoyable time to be in the forest.
Rather more people attended than we had anticipated, and as a result we did run out of some course-printed maps which necessitated collecting maps from finishers and reissuing them to later starters. We apologise to those deprived of their maps. Estimating map numbers is not easy, and clearly overproduction is a drain on the club's resources. Our concern was that everyone should get an enjoyable run, and we hope that we achieved that. Thank you to those who did hand back their maps; you should all by now have received replacements.
We would like to thank our controller, Kim Eden, for her most helpful
suggestions, advice, encouragement and good nature; also Mike Bickle for his
excellent organising, and the several staff members of Forest Enterprise from
whom we received considerable assistance...
and thank you all for coming and
making our efforts worthwhile!
Fred Northrop (WAOC)
The event was blessed with good weather and more people turned up than expected, hence the problem with running out of maps on a number of courses. A big thankyou to those who handed in their maps as they finished so that others could have a run, hopefully you should have a replacement map with these results.
Fred and son Neil managed to use the best areas of the wood to try and make the courses interesting and keep you away from the brambles. I hope you all enjoyed your run and thankyou to Fred and Neil for all the work involved with planning and mapping.
