Organisers CommentsWell done to the competitors who came along to the newly mapped area in St Neots. I made the course a Map Memory in order to try to squeeze a reasonable length course into a small area which meant that we had competitors criss-crossing the park and some surrounding streets. Because of the concern that I had about potential vandalism, I chose not to put out "Orienteering Markers" at the controls, which I believed would draw unwanted attention to their existence. This meant that the competitors were trying to seek out a four inch square laminated section of map which in the reducing light meant that despite finding the correct location, it was a struggle to find the actual control, which is not what orienteering is about. Nevertheless, it was the same for everyone. In spite of the approach taken, we still managed to "lose" one control half way through the evening. Number six "Southern Tree" had its control removed. Those competitors that struggled on regardless, have obviously not been not additionally penalised. Maurice Hemingway |
