Coe Fen Summer Galloppen - 19 June 2002 Results

I hope you all all enjoyed the event.  Sorry about the southwesternmost fence corner which was on the southeasternmost fence corner and my inconsistent control numbering on the short course.

The idea of skipping a control came from some versions of a race I've heard about in the US known as "The Billygoat" which is a long race, sometimes a mass start where you can skip one control.  I had considered doing a mass start, but handicapping the race by having the number of controls which you could skip depending on your age category.  You would need a course shape that wouldn't fit on Coe Fen though.  Maybe I'll try it some day...
 
Times have been checked, but let me know if there are any errors in names, times etc.  Noone did just the short course.  We don't have an accurate time for Asa who completed the medium course but then did not complete the short course, as no intervening times were recorded.  However, we believe it took her about 33 minutes for the medium course, omitting no controls!!!
 
The most popular controls to miss out were the fourth control (a gate) on each of the short and medium parts.

On the short course this cut out 225m of good running - but cutting out 5 (north end of copse beside stream) saved 350m, although less if you didn't want to wade through deep grass.  Cutting out 8 (gate at bottom of map) also saved 250m, including a slowish path run.

On the medium course, cutting out 4 (the gate) saved about 350m.  Cutting out 8 (depression in the grass) saves only about 150m, but they are 150m of dense grass with a vague control.  A good one was 7 (the southwest-er-east-fencecorner) which saved 340m of running through the long grass if you only considered going round the uncrossable stream to the north, although less if you went out to the road from 6.  Skipping 9 would save about 250m too.
