DANCING IN MY DREAMS by Neil Duffield Commissioned and first performed by: Action Transport Theatre Company (2005) CAST
SIZE 5 AND UPWARD What the press said about it: 'The story is set during the mass evacuation of city children during the Second World War. Kathleen is an illegitimate Irish Catholic girl billeted with the unwilling Freda and her family. Freda is strict chapel and her own disappointments in life are taken out on the homesick evacuee. The trials of the girl’s situation struck a chord with the audience, especially those of an age to remember such events. I have rarely heard such lively discussions of a show in an interval..... Dancing In My Dreams, though meaty, is not a gloomy piece as Kathleen finds her escape in her dream-world of Hollywood musicals, Fred and Ginger, and Irving Berlin – evocated a cappella by the cast of five. This is fine musical theatre with the ensemble slipping easily from emotional scenes to elegant song and dance.' OXFORD TIMES July 2009 '....The play is full of positive messages, although that is not to say that darkness is entirely pushed aside. Much of that comes from the British characters themselves, wrestling with xenophobia and religious intolerance. It is ideal for older children as well as their parents - it does not patronise, and everyone should learn something along the way....' THE STAGE July 2009 '....It all works brilliantly. The whole production is a tremendous success and I can recommend it highly to everyone....' DAILY INFO. OXFORD June 2009
