What generation is my Tonkinese?

© Linda Vousden

In the USA  & Canada the Tonkinese have been bred for so long that a Tonkinese pedigree will only show Tonkinese so the question is no longer significant. However the generation is of more interest where the Tonkinese pedigrees may include Burmese or Siamese  - such as in the UK where we are still breeding some first generation Tonkinese.

On several occasions I have been asked "How can I tell what generation my Tonkinese is?" so I have devised a very simple formula:-

(The LOWER Generation Of The Parents) + 1  =  The Generation Of Their Kittens

Confused?  The table below gives some examples and for the sake of argument I've called the Burmese and Siamese both generation 0 and I have highlighted the lower generation of the parents.

Parents (Generation)

Formula

Offspring

Burmese (0) x Siamese (0)

Burmese (0) x Tonkinese (1)

Siamese (0) x Tonkinese (3)

Tonkinese (1) x Tonkinese (2)

Tonkinese (2) x Tonkinese (4)

0 + 1 = 1

0 + 1 = 1

0 + 1 = 1

1 + 1 = 2

2 + 1 = 3
