What generation is my Tonkinese?

© Linda Vousden

In the USA  & Canada the Tonkinese have been bred for so long that a Tonkinese pedigree will only show Tonkinese so the question is no longer significant. However the generation is of more interest where the Tonkinese pedigrees may include Burmese or Siamese  - such as in the UK where we still allow breeding of first generation Tonkinese to keep our gene pool healthy until it is large enough to be self supporting..

On several occasions I have been asked "How can I tell what generation my Tonkinese is?" so I have devised a very simple formula:-

(The LOWER Generation Of The Parents) + 1  =  The Generation Of Their Kittens

Confused?  The table below gives some examples and for the sake of argument I've called the Burmese and Siamese both generation 0 and I have highlighted the lower generation of the parents.

Parents (Generation)

Formula

Offspring

Burmese (0) x Siamese (0)

Burmese (0) x Tonkinese (1)

Siamese (0) x Tonkinese (3)

Tonkinese (1) x Tonkinese (2)

Tonkinese (2) x Tonkinese (4)

0 + 1 = 1

0 + 1 = 1

0 + 1 = 1

1 + 1 = 2

2 + 1 = 3
