How to breed 1st generation Tonkinese

This information relates to GCCF registered Tonkinese that are born on or after  01/01/1999.

  1. Take 1 Burmese and 1 Siamese - one should be a male and the other should be a female, it doesn't matter which is which but no other combination is suitable.

  2. Mix them together at the appropriate time and presto - Tonkinese kittens are due.

.... but there are conditions : -

1.       Both the Burmese and Siamese must be GCCF registered, on the Active Register.

2.       Both the Burmese and Siamese must be on the Full Register (ie. must have 5 preceding generations of only Burmese in a Burmese pedigree or Siamese in a Siamese pedigree). The registration numbers in the Burmese and Siamese pedigrees must only be prefixed with the letters CS or NS. The registration letters CSREF, CSEXP, CSSR, REF, EXP, SR or SRNS etc are not acceptable. Up until the 1960's cats were registered with a number only, but now if you find a registration number without a letter prefix you should question it!

3.        Only the following colours may be bred from :-

Caramel-, Apricot-, Cinnamon- and Fawn-Point Siamese are not acceptable in Tonkinese breeding as these colours were not recognised in the Siamese at the time the Tonkinese Registration Policy was approved.

4.        The progeny of a Burmese x Siamese mating may be suitable for breeding from, but they are not permitted to be shown until they have 3 preceding generations of Tonkinese i.e. :-

5.        Just as you would when breeding Tonkinese x Tonkinese you should be looking at the quality of the breeding cats as representatives of their breed. It is my personal opinion that a Siamese of the older 'type' (with less deep-set eyes, more upright ears and a good rounded chest) is a better option than the more extreme contemporary type; and a Burmese without a highly foreshortened nose is desirable.

  • Do they have good health and size?

  • Do they have good temperament? Avoid easily stressed or nervous cats as the kittens will inherit these traits.

  • Do they have a good examples of their breed's coat-pattern?

  • Do they have good eye-colour for their breed?

  • Do they have good colour definition (e.g. does the chocolate look like chocolate or is it too dark?)

  • If they are Tortoiseshell or Tabby, are their markings clear and in accordance with the requirements for the breed? NOTE: the type of tabby in the Siamese is not relevant but it is useful to know it.

  • Are they free of spotting or barring (except Tabby & Tortie-tabby).

  • Do they have any characteristics that, although permitted in their own breed, would be penalised in a Tonkinese?

6.        .... and finally, please note that from 1st January 2007 kittens born to Tonkinese (that have any of the three coat-patterns) mated with any other breed are registered as 'No Recognised Breed'.
