The household was led by a Guru (Religious Master) Shree Shree Chidananda Swami whom Dr Mukherjee greatly loved and who taught him about the ancient scriptures, philosophy, ayrvedic medicine, healing and of course astrology.

Dr. Mukherjee's initial schooling was in an Ashram type boarding school called Santiniketan, about 100 miles way from Calcutta. This is one of the most famous schools in India and it is the cultural centre of India and well known internationally because the founder of this school was the poet and philosopher Rabindra Nath Tagore. Tagore was the first Indian to receive the Nobel prize. Dr Mukherjee spent an idyllic childhood at the school and was brought up in atmosphere of poetry, music, art, and literature.
 

Dr Mukherjee graduated in general science from Calcutta University and was sent to England for further studies. He graduated in Physics and material science from London University and then went on to do a PhD in Physics from the same University. He worked for GEC and then for Lucas Aerospace where he became Research and Development Manager. He developed a new and extremely successful process for coating transparent conductive oxides onto plastics which has an important application in the stealth fighter aircraft and other applications in the defence industry and he has many patents in this subject. Dr Mukherjee has lectured widely on this topic and has been invited to give talks to the American Defence staff at the Pentagon, Washington.
 

Dr Mukherjee's interest and involvement in Astrology has grown from early childhood. His great great grand father was famous throughout India as an authority in Astrology and Hindu philosophy and his Guru, Shree Shree Chidananda Swami was extremely respected in this field and in Ayrvedic medicine. Many well known astrologers used to come regularly to his family house and engage in intense debate with his Guru, and Dr Mukherjee would sit quietly in one corner of the room and listen intently to their discussions. Through these means and through instruction from his Guru, Dr Mukherjee had the good fortune to acquire a deep knowledge of astrology and philosophical ideas to which few have had access. Dr Mukherjee has maintained his keen interest in Astrology throughout his scientific career and has tried to use his analytical techniques to show that astrology does work. He has collected a great deal of data to show that astrology is not bogus and does have underlying scientific principles. He believes that an understanding of the planetary influences can lead to a better understanding of ourselves and help us to improve our lives and to find our true direction. Dr Mukherjee's understanding in Ayurvedic medicine through his Guru Shree Shree Chidananda Swami has helped many patients with illnesses which have not responded to modern day medicines.
