One of the great and glorious joys of freelancing (besides when it’s all going smoothly and there’s food in the fridge) is the range of work around.
One moment you can be accompanying a Victorian evening or leading a boozy audience through some music hall, and the next strutting your stuff in a ten piece soul band or enjoying the intimate atmosphere of a piano/vocal cabaret. Although “variety” in theatre terms may not be as popular as it once was, from a work perspective it certainly keeps you fresher and broadens your playing style than always doing the same job.
I personally relish the new challenges every commission creates, and have worked hard to ensure I have the right equipment and attitude for every occasion.
