S. A. Williams - Aberavon R. F. C., The Barbarians, Wales, Rugby Union and Rugby League player.
Sid Williams was one of the finest wing three-quarters to play for Aberavon R. F. C. He played a few games for Aberavon at the tender age of sixteen before leaving to play for Maesteg R. F. C.
Sid was capped in the 1931 season for the Welsh Schoolboys Under 14 side against an English Schoolboys’ Under 14 team. The game was played in Cardiff and Wales won. The score was 4-0. Sid returned to Aberavon in the mid thirties to embark on a wonderful career with his home club
Aberavon were the Welsh Club Champions for the season 1937-38. Sid scored 37 tries and in the 1938-39 season he scored another 25 tries. In that same year Sid was awarded Welsh caps against England, Scotland and Ireland and was then selected to play for the Barbarians. He was the first Aberavon R. F. C. team member to play for the famous club.
In 1939, just before the outbreak of the Second World War, Sid went ‘North’ and signed for Salford R. F. L. Club. Sometime later, he joined the Army for the duration.
Sid played in various war-time internationals; the teams comprised players from Union and League Clubs. In 1952, his Rugby League career over, Sid returned home to Port Talbot.
Sidney A. Williams died on the 28th of August 1976. A brilliant rugby career was at an end.
