- Boot to the A:\> prompt with a Win98 startup floppy
(or bootable win98 CD-ROM).
- Once you are at the A:\> prompt type
SYS C:
This will correct the problem of Win98 not booting, but now you will be unable
to boot into WinXP.
- Boot into Win98 and open a MS-DOS prompt (Click Start, Select Programs,
then select MS-DOS prompt).
- Navigate to the root directory of the Win98 hard drive.
cd c:\
- Use the practically-archaic DEBUG.EXE utility to load the boot sector into memory
and dump it to file as follows:
NOTE - Only required if bootsect.dos is lost or corrupted.
Only type in the text highlighted in red.
C:\>debug
-L 100 2 0 1
-N C:\BOOTSECT.DOS
-R BX
-0
-R CX
-200
-W
-Q
- Re-boot, check and ensure you can boot into Win98.
- Re-boot your PC with your WinXP CD in the CDROM drive and select the recovery console.
Once you are at the command prompt do as follows:
- type fixmbr
- Type fixboot
- type exit to reboot.
You should now be able to boot to both OSes
