#######################################################################################
=======================================================================================
Update Display Driver and DirectX (if applicable)
=======================================================================================
You graphics card may be newer than Windows 98 in which case it is unlikely to have
drivers for it. Windows install will have used standard VGA driver.
The other possibility is that though windows 98 does have a driver for your card, you
have a more recent update.
In either case you have to install / Update this driver.
Some advanced graphics card have DirectX as a pre-requisite in which case you will
have to install the latest applicable version of DirectX.
Install DirectX if required (Restart will occur)
Install / Update graphics card driver if required (A restart may be required)
Change Graphic Screen resolution to your preferred value.
Change Colours setting to your preferred value (Restart will be required).
=======================================================================================
Tweak Settings for most efficient running
=======================================================================================
Label all hard drives - Ensure that all your hard drives are labelled.
Control Panel, System, Performance :-
File System, CD-ROM
Quad speed or higher (defaults to this - check and change if necessary)
File System, Hard Disk
Network server (from Desktop)
restart will occur
Ensure That DMA is enabled against all hard drives, CD-RW and DVD-ROM.
=======================================================================================
Install Motherboard drivers and utilities as required
=======================================================================================
Your motherboard may have on-board hardware which needs their drivers which will be on
the motherboard CD.
You will need to install these.
Modern motherboards have chipsets which need drivers.
The chipset manufacturers (intel/sis/via etc) release updates for these.
For example Intel have the Intel INF Update and the Intel Application Accelerator.
You will need to install / update these.
=======================================================================================
Install or Update Peripheral drivers as required
=======================================================================================
Printers, scanners, modems and such external kit need to either have their drivers
installed or updated.
Do those now if there are any.
=======================================================================================
Usefull quick Tweaks (optional)
=======================================================================================
Make Control Panel applets available directly from the Start menu as follows:
First, right-click on the Start button and choose Open.
Then, right-click on the background area in the Start menu
folder and choose New/Folder.
Rename this new folder with this string:
Quick Control Panel.{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D}
Create Shortcut to C:\WINDOWS\Notepad.exe
and move the resulting shortcut to C:\WINDOWS\SendTo
Now you can right click and send to notepad files that do not automatically
open in notepad. (Example *.inf, *.log, *.bat *.ini etc)
=======================================================================================
Install Useful Utilities
=======================================================================================
Some utilities are almost a pre-requisite - Examples are:
1. compression tools such as winzip
2. PDF file readers such as Acrobat Reader

From time to time as needs arose Microsoft has issued fixes to problems
found in Windows 98 SE.
These updates can be downloaded from Windows Update.
See my procedure on how to get Windows Update to your local hard drive.
How to get updates for your OS from Windows Update to your local hard drive
Alternatively you can visit the Microsoft Security Bulletin Service and find out
what Microsoft has issued for Windows 98 SE and get the updates through that
mechanism.
What follows is my own record of what I believe is required as fixes for
Windows 98 SE. When I apply these then visit Windows Update I get a clean
status (i.e. no critical updates required).
My record also includes IE5 updates as IE5.0 was integral to Windows 98 SE.
In this list updates not specific to Windows 98 SE or not shown on the
Microsoft Security Bulletin Service have been underscored with ********.
I have also indicated (Restart) wherever applying the update requires a restart.
NOTE - Microsoft has recently revamped the Microsoft Security Bulletin Service
and it looks more useful than before.
