We are a 15 minute walk from the centre of
Glasgow, located just off the A814 Clydeside Expressway in Finnieston. The
Exhibition Centre railway station is 5 minutes walk from our offices. The Bus
Routes 8 & 96 are the closest to our premises with stops on Finnieston Street and the
Expressway [nr. Victor Devine’s Motorcycle Showroom]. The Overground Bus
Network (62, 9, etc..) passes along Argyle Street at the top of Finnieston
Street (near PC World).
Periodically, we are pleased to offer one week work placements assisting Electricians with their duties.
Electricians go out to customer’s premises and alter the wiring, install new light fittings or fix faulty power sockets, etc.. Sometimes they work on construction sites with other trades (plumbers, joiners, etc) and install the wiring for a new building or major alteration. Lights and switchgear have to be installed. Materials and equipment have to be shifted around, the site has to be kept tidy, etc.. You will not work with "live" electricity, because all the circuits are isolated before we start to work on the wires. Brief details of our Company are shown on our website at www.johnmcnicol.co.uk. If necessary, your school will be able to download our full Statement of Safety Policy from this website. Also available is a Copy of our Safety Guidance Notes - a resume of major points from the full Safety Policy.
On
the first day, report at 8am to "N. Store" at our premises at 123
Elliot Street, Finnieston, Glasgow [click
for a map of the locale]. We will discuss safety aspects
of work, the conditions that you are likely to encounter on site and any other
salient points before you go out with the Electrician. Once you have had a
chance to read our Safety Policy, you can ask questions about any points that
need further discussion. If we are busy you will go out to site and shadow an
Electrician, if we are quiet you would work in our workshop with the electric
motor repair squad. The standard work hours for Electricians are 8am – 4pm. If
you are out on site you make your own way home from that site at 4pm.
(The Electrician will make sure that you get back into the centre of town
convenient for a bus stop). The Electrician will brief you on where to report to
the following morning. It would be beneficial if you can figure out the public
transport links from central Glasgow to your home, as it is unlikely that you
would finish each day at Elliot Street.
Your school must issue you with overalls and safety boots and a travel pass. We will provide any necessary safety glasses or hard hats, etc. Bring a packed lunch - as site canteens are rare nowadays - although there are often convenient 'tea vans' or local bakers. [Our van driver can offer opinions on a surprising number of tea vans throughout the majority of West Central Scotland.] It would be unwise to wear your most fashionable clothing to work, as it can become a little physical in dusty places at times.
