Chris Lovell - Peterborough Evening Telegraph 14/02/2003

And dropping through the Scene letterbox this week came the new CD from Peterborough's very own Moosejaw.

A brilliant and truly warped piece of work that, well to be perfectly honest, I do not feel I am worthy to review and even if I was, then there just wouldn't be enough space here to do it justice.  Moosejaw are one band that really do not fit comfortably into any particular genre...  The world they inhabit is a dark and wonderful place, a place where, if you were to visit and I strongly recommend that you do... you'd be forever looking over your shoulder.  Twisted poetry set to the soundtrack of a funfair on the outskirts of Twin Peaks?  The owls are not what they seem and if you need to know anything more you'd better go ask the log lady...  Alternatively you could track this CD down via the bands website at www.moosejaw.co.uk or pick it up at one of their far too infrequent gigs.

....you guys are really off the wall.  It's great to see bands working on the edge.  You're brave.............

THE COOPER TEMPLE CLAUSE + MOOSEJAW

1st March 2001
Living up to their reputation for bringing to Peterborough tomorrow's stars today, the CWNN guys seem to have pulled it off once again.

First on tonight Moosejaw, popular Peterborough boys who may be getting a little long in the tooth, but still know how to rock out better than most of the area's younger bands. It has to be said there must be more than one Nick Cave fan in the band, or else Dean is instructing them on what to listen to. They come on with all the poison of The Bad Seeds playing a home friendly match with The Doors. Interesting vocals too, references to suicide scars and tattooed knuckles lend a very dark slant to the music.

"Good to see Peterborough's finest sleaze monkeys Moosejaw back in action last week after a break of well, far too long.
They returned to the local scene with what can only be described as a blinding set, slightly reminiscent of late Birthday Party.
They definately draw their influences from that polluted well at the dark end of the street.  They have a five track CD available too, Splitting Skin which features songs with titles such as Drinking at the Bar of the Lonely Souls, which comes over all doors like and is well worth tracking down."

A heavy night out

Bubbling up from the drowned wrecks of Babblefish and Jack Nicholson, Moosejaw lurched on to the Peterborough scene at the end of last year.
Darkly humorous lyrics about death, sex and drugs abound as the band wail through some wonderfully gothic songs.
Moosejaw (not some weird illness) bellow through tracks that would depress the most prozacked individual with skilful vocalisation over funky melodies.
Having caught Moosejaw at the Norfolk in Lincoln Road, I can recommend that you give them a try.
Dean, Jez, Andy, Simon and Nick make music like few others.

Moosejaw will head up gig

Moosejaw: either a terribly disfigured congenital defect or a rather good Peterborough Band.  You decide.
As a hint Moosejaw are heading up a gig at the Crown in Lincoln Road, Peterborough on Thursday.
They will be pedalling their blend of original, funky, rocky protest music.

Cave-men are ones to watch

Any band which can be mentioned in the same breath as Nick Cave is always worth going out of your way to see.
Which is why you should go out of your way to catch Moosejaw at the Cherrytree on July 1st. They marry the most depressing elements of Nick Cave with the darker side of Radiohead.
With the Junk Puppets as support, the gig is something of a warm up for the bands appearance at the Willow Festival on July 10th.
The band has just finished its second demo, and has a five track CD to show for it, which will be available soon.
So, if I had a slot called Recommendation of the week, this gig would be it.
