OBAN -  Glencruitten Strathclyde Scotland Length - 4452 yards S.S.S. 63  A highland course, plenty of hill, plenty of bog but interesting for all that. A mountain rescue helicopter landed in front of the clubhouse as we arrived - that should have told us something.Weblink

PANMURE GOLF CLUB Barry, Carnoustie Length - 6317 yards S.S.S. 71 The Club was formed in 1845 and moved to its present location on the Barry links in 1899. The course is of the classic links type - lots of heather, gorse, whins, ups & downs, ins & outs making it a stern examination of golf. For all that, it is a most enjoyable course to play - no two holes are the same. The 6th was described by Ben Hogan as the finest hole in golf. http://www.panmuregolfclub.co.uk/

PEEWIT  Ilkeston Borough Derbyshire Length - 4002 yards S.S.S. 60 - A dinky little 9 hole pastoral course shoehorned in to a very small area. It is rumoured they're going to build houses on it - shame !

RADCLIFFE - ON - TRENT G.C.  near Nottingham. Founded 1909. Length - 6381 yards S.S.S. 70 . An excellent example of a mature parkland course. There are many trees and some of the holes are dog-legged. The greens were in fine condition when we played in late November on a cold, bright day.

RAMSDALE Calverton Notts  - The are two 18hole courses here. The first is a par 3 course for beginners  but a very good course for sharpening up the short game. On the main course, length - 6500 yards S.S.S. 71 the front nine is converted pasture, very flat, a stiff climb is then needed up 'coronary hill' to the 10th (or catch the complimentary buggy) where the course changes markedly in character to a group of tricky and much more interesting holes.Weblink

ROYAL MUSSELBURGH GOLF CLUB - Musselburgh, East Lothian, Scotland

Length 6237 yards par 70

Royal Musselburgh

A very pleasant parkland course set in the grounds of an old hall. Nothing too demanding about most of the holes but, like any good course, plenty of problems for the wayward shot. The club rooms in the hall are magnificent. Http://www.waimea.demon.co.uk/musselburgh.html

ROYAL NORTH DEVON Westward Ho! Length - 6665 yards S.S.S. 72 Designer - Old Tom Morris  The oldest course and club in England. Much has been written about this superb course. It is an uncompromising, nearly flat sea shore links course with undulating fairways, hidden pot bunkers (marked by white painted rocks looking appropriately like tomb-stones) and razor-sharp banks of tall rushes.  Http://www.royalnorthdevongolfclub.co.uk/

RUFFORD Notts Length - 6173 yards S.S.S. 69  A mixed parkland / heathland course, pine-woods, bracken, a splendid setting. Weblink

SCOTSCRAIG GOLF CLUB Tayport, Fife. Length - 6550 yards S.S.S. 72 This is a links course which looks more like a parkland course. It was played over since 1817 and the present course was designed by James Braid in 1923. Although it is set amongst pines and heather, it is very close to the sea and reveals its links nature by its fairways. It's a very pleasant course to play with lots of interesting and challenging holes. Weblink

SEAHOUSES  Northumberland. Length 5542 yards S.S.S. 67  A seaside links course with holes on both sides of the road. Wonderful views, testing holes - what more is needed ?  http://www.seahousesgolf.co.uk/

The holes on the land-side of the road are slightly more benign than those near the sea.

SEEDY MILL Litchfield Length - 6247 yards S.S.S. 70 A fairly new parkland / pastureland course. Weblink

SINFIN Derby Length - 6183 yards S.S.S. 69 A flat pastoral type of course. Some holes can get very muddy in poor weather (like when I played it).

SPRINGWATER Calverton Notts Length - 6224 yards S.S.S. 70 It was 9 holes when I played it, later extended to 18. Its all along, up or down a hillside. Http://www.springwatergolf.co.uk/

SLEAFORD South Rauceby, Lincs. Length - 6503 yards S.S.S. 71 An excellent, mostly flat, parkland/heath course with some very interesting (tricky) holes - especially the par 3 12th over the pine trees. Weblink

ST ANDREWS JUBILEE COURSE Length - 6742 yards S.S.S. 73 Anything I could write about the 6 courses at St Andrews has already been written by better men than me. For the record, the Jubilee course was built as a 12 hole layout in 1897 and lengthened to 18 holes in 1905. It is said to be the most testing of the courses (it certainly was for me). I played it on a sunny, cold afternoon with only light winds blowing. http://www.standrews.org.uk/

ST ENODOC Rock, Wadebridge, Cornwall Length - 6207 yards S.S.S. 70 Designer - James Braid. If you think links courses are all flat and uninspiring, this course is anything but. Built above the cliffs at the village of Rock, it winds its way tortuously through and around massive sand dunes up to a high point at the 13th. Every hole is different, each presents a fresh challenge. This course is the very opposite of manicured parkland golf - and all the better for it. Weblink

TREVOSE Constantine Bay, Padstow, Cornwall. Length - 6608 yards S.S.S. 72 Designer - H.S.Colt  A classic links course at the sea shore with some splendid views. There are some great holes here on what is an easy - walking course. The winds can be fierce as there is no protection, adding to the experience.  Http://www.trevose-gc.co.uk

WHITEKIRK North Berwick Scotland Length - 6526 yards S.S.S. 72.  I wondered why I couldn't find a card for Whitekirk - I must have ripped it up in disgust with myself. This is a resolutely highland course being built around the top of a wind-swept exposed hill. Avenues of rock and gorse define the fairways. Http://www.whitekirk.com

WIGTOWN & BLADNOCK Galloway Scotland Length - 2731 yards S.S.S. 67 A small 9 hole course set in and about a hollow on the edge of the village.Weblink

WOBURN Milton Keynes Bucks There are two superb courses in the grounds of this estate. Both are carved out through avenues of pine trees making each fairway a world of its own. Dukes course - length - 6940 yards S.S.S. 74. Duchess course - length - 6641 yards S.S.S. 72 I played the Dukes - which was far to adventurous for me.Weblink
