| HADDINGTON Haddington East Lothian Scotland Length - 6280 yards S.S.S. 70 A fairly flat traditional parkland type of course, but none the worse for that. http://www.haddingtongolf.com/ HINKLEY Hinkley Leics Length 6592 yards S.S.S. 71 - A traditional pastoral course, not too hilly, well kept although I wish they'd keep the lakes away from me and my ball.Weblink HOPEMAN Hopeman nr Elgin Grampian Scotland Length - 5531 yards S.S.S.67 A rolling sea-side links course characterised by the 8ft high gorse which seems to surround many of the fairways. Hit a ball in there and while you search for it, your partners will be searching for you. Weblink Beach hole Par3 INNERLEITHEN Borders Scotland Length - 3033 yards S.S.S. 69 (9 holes). A course which is much better than it looks from a cursory glance from the road as you drive through the course. It's a substantially flat moorland course with a burn trapping the ball frequently. View up the course from the 3rd tee. KINGUSSIE Inverness-shire Scotland Length - 5615 yards S.S.S. 68 Designed by Vardon & Herd in 1891. A pleasant highland course with some very 'interesting' par 3s and great views over the mountains. Weblink KILWORTH SPRINGS across the M1 from Lutterworth. Leics Length - 6543 yards S.S.S.71 It was very new when I played it so the impression was of an open course made from pasture land. Oh, there's an old quarry, turned into a tasty par 3 hole and, on the back nine, a few lakes with magnetic properties. Weblink LADYBANK Ladybank Fife Scotland Length - 6754 yards S.S.S. 72 Designed by Old Tom Morris as 6 holes in 1879, modified to 9 holes in 1910 and finally to 18 holes in 1961. A fine parkland/heathland course with many pines and birches, heather and gorse all rolled up to make a challenging golf game around a beautiful course. Weblink From the 1st tee Further round LANHYDROCK Bodmin, Cornwall Length - 6100 yards S.S.S.70 An excellent parkland course well laid out on hilly ground with a few lakes added for good measure. There are some long walks between holes. Weblink Photos - the clubhouse in the distance from the 13th - the 1st from the tee - the 2nd green LEVEN LINKS Leven, Fife Length - 6421 yards S.S.S. 70. The links here have been golfed over for a very long time. The course was extended to 18 holes in 1868 and the Leven Golf Society, resident at the course, is the 11th oldest golf club in the world. Next door is the Leven Thistle G.C. This is another classic links course with nothing but a road between it and the ocean. I don't think I saw a single tree on the course, but there are plenty of gorse thickets to loose a stray ball in. Many class the 18th as one of the finest finishing holes in golf - maybe - but I do know its got a deep burn right in front of the green. Weblink The 2nd fairway - Knowe - View of the town LINDEN HALL Longhorsley Morpeth. Length 6846 yards S.S.S. 73 A well-layed out modern parkland course with trees, water and other carefully placed hazards to catch the wayward shot. http://www.lindenhallgolf.co.uk/ LONGNIDDRY GOLF CLUB - Longniddry, East Lothian, Scotland Length 6219 yards par 68 The 10th, and the 13th par 3 One of my all-time favourites. With no par 5s but plenty of long par 4 s, this is a stern test of golf. Although just across the road from the sea-shore, the front nine are played mainly through tree-lined fairways. It's really only when you step onto the 11th tee that the course shows its links nature. Weblink LOOE near Widegates, Looe, Cornwall Length - 5940 Yards S.S.S. 68 Designer - Harry Vardon. A parkland course built around a hill, hence there is quite a bit of hard walking required. Not a course to be on in windy weather as it's very exposed. On the other hand, there are splendid views out to sea. Weblink Photo - the 17th fairway MAYWOOD FARM Risley Derbys Length - 6424 yards S.S.S. 71 A course built from pasture land hence it can get a bit boggy down the bottom end in poor weather. The first hole is uphill all the way and will soon clear out the cobwebs. Weblink MONKTON HALL Musselburgh G.C. Scotland Length - 6614 yards S.S.S. 71. Photo - Looking up towards the 18th and the clubhouse. A fine parkland course which changes to more heath and pine woods when you've crossed under the railway. The 18th is much steeper than shown in the photo, fortunately, a friendly welcome awaits in the clubhouse. Weblink MUSSELBURGH OLD COURSE East Lothian Scotland Length - 5380 yards S.S.S. 67 (9 holes). This golf course has the distinction of being the oldest in the world, being first played over in the 1500s. It is a pure links course and is, today surrounded by the Musselburgh race course, indeed, some of the holes are played over the rails of the track. Weblink The 1st green and the race course stands Looking back down the course to Edinburgh. NETHY BRIDGE Abernethy Inverness-shire Scotland Length -2489 yards S.S.S.66 9 interesting heathland holes. The 8th is an interesting downhill long par 3 with a monument in the middle of the fairway. Do you draw to the left or fade to the right - either way you just know the ball will just go straight on and thump straight into the wretched thing. Weblink The 1st green and 2nd tee. NEWBATTLE Dalkeith Midlothian Scotland Length - 6025 yards S.S.S. 69 A nice open rolling parkland course and a friendly clubhouse. The 17th 'Abbey' is played from a tee above a river gorge to the fairway far below. Perversely, the green is back up the other side. Still, only one more hole left to play. Weblink NEWQUAY Cornwall Length - 6151 yards S.S.S. 69 Designer - H.Colt. A sea-side links course right on the edge of the town backed by hotels and boarding houses. The photos show its character - it's quite tight and quite a surprise that eighteen holes could have been built on the space. A good traditional course not to be missed if in the area. Weblink Photos - general views of the course from the 6th NORTH BERWICK WEST COURSE Length 6315 yards S.S.S. 70 Photos - (1) - the 2nd tee, (2) - the 4th par 3 Carlekemp, (3) - the 13th par 4 Pit, (4) - the 15th Redan par 3. A classic links course, separated from the sea by dunes and, on some holes, only the sandy beach. Although essentially flat, it is an exciting course to play as the wind can (and does) come at you from any direction. One of the classic holes in golf is the 150 yard par 3 15th - The Redan. I wish I had taken more photos , but I was too busy trying to appear to play golf !. Weblink |
