| DOWNFIELD Dundee Length - 6803 yards S.S.S. 73 Opened in 1932 although golf had been played on the land previously. Designed by C.K.Cotton but much modified in 1964. This is a magnificent rolling parkland course with each hole defined by avenues of pines with numerous ornamental trees and bushes around the course. http://web.ukonline.co.uk/downfieldgc/ The 4th Lost Horizon The 12th Davy Jone's Locker DUDDINGSTON Edinburgh Length - 6420 yards par 71 Formed 1895, course design - Willie Park. A mature parkland course in the suburbs of Edinburgh, beautifully maintained. http://www.duddingston-golf-club.com/ DUNBAR GOLF CLUB Dunbar, East Lothian Scotland 6404 yards par 71 Photos - Looking back towards the clubhouse from the 6th, over the burn at the 15th. A great test of golf (unfortunately for me ). This is a classic links course. It starts tamely enough with three holes near the club house sheltered by a high wall. Passing through this to the 4th tee, you are met by the full force of whatever weather is blowing that day across the firth. All the rest of the holes, apart from the 18th, are played along the sea-shore with not a tree to provide shelter. A cracking good course, not to be missed if you are in the area. The club house stocks over 100 varieties of whisky for those of a mind after the battle. Http://www.waimea.demon.co.uk/dunbar.html DUNSTANBURGH CASTLE Embleton Northumberland. Length 6298 yards S.S.S. 70 A fine links course set amongst the sand dunes. The original 9 holes were laid out in 1900 and redesigned and extended to 18 in the 1920s by James Braid. http://www.dunstanburgh.com/ The magnificent ruined castle. EDWALTON Notts Municipal pasture land course. Par 3 9 holes course 1592 yards S.S.S. 27 and a par 4 9 holes course 3336 yards S.S.S.36. Weblink FOREST PARK Stockton on Forest York Length 6211 yards S.S.S. 70 - I only played 12 holes here. The wind was blowing the sand out of the bunkers, the rain was horizontal, so time to call it a day.Weblink FOXTON HALL Alnmouth Golf Club, Northumberland. Founded 1869 although the present course was laid out in 1930 by H. Colt. Length 6007 yards S.S.S.69 Set on the cliff tops above Alnmouth, this beautifully maintained course is one which could perhaps be described as links, heath, or parkland. Whichever, it's a fine course. http://www.alnmouthgolfclub.com/index.htm A fine course. THE GLEN North Berwick East links. Length - 6098 yards S.S.S.69 A delightful links course set up on top of the cliffs at North Berwick. Great views of the firth and the Bass Rock, if you have time to look ! GOSWICK Berwick - upon-Tweed (Goswick) Golf Club 6852 yards S.S.S.72 Formed 1890 (9 holes) extended to 18 in 1894 by J. Braid. Out amongst the dunes The Clubhouse from the 3rd tee. Another links course, some holes of which are played along the sand-dunes with the beach and fine views out to sea to accompany your walk. We've always had good weather here each time we've played in early summer - or maybe it just seemed that way because I like the course so much. P.S. forget the comments about good weather - played May 2003 in a biting cold wind - still enjoyed it ! http://www.goswicklinksgc.co.uk/ GREETHAM VALLEY near Stamford back up the A1. . Length - 6351 yds S.S.S. 71 The front 9 had more character than the back which was on converted pasture land. It hadn't been opened long when I played it.Weblink GULLANE COURSES - Gullane, East Lothian, Scotland Photo - Gullane no.1 course 1st fairway
There are 3 courses at the village of Gullane, all starting nearly from the side of the main road. The courses are imaginatively named no.1 no.2 and no.3. All wind their way up and around massive sand dunes known as Gullane Bents. All three offer the very best in links golf, although no.1 is rated most highly. I've played no.2 - 6244 yards, par 71 and no.3 - 5252 yards, par 68. Http://www.waimea.demon.co.uk/gullane.html |
