INTRODUCTION

This exciting project grew out of an interactive exhibition of local history, EAST BRIGHTON SEEN, held at St Mark's church in Eastern Road, Brighton, in May 2007.

THE 1792 TERRIER MAP
This beautiful map of Brighton was our inspiration. The original is held at the East Sussex Records Office but is available to purchase on CD.
We have spent 2008 exploring the possibility of creating the whole map using local wool, naturally dyed with plants that we've grown or gathered ourselves. We now have 3 working spinning wheels (and one that needs a little TLC), a couple of lazy kates and niddy noddies and a number of weaving looms. We have reached the dyeing stage and have bought some equipment with thanks to a grant from the East Brighton Trust. We are planning to knit all the coloured strips and weave the areas of arable land and sheep downland. We have already found a volunteer who will embroider the words but we are still looking for someone to offer to create the beautiful compass (below).

We have devised a method of translating the map image into knitting patterns and have a large number of volunteer knitters standing by. However, our next task is to experiment with various dyes until we achieve the colours we need and, of course, spin enough wool.
Do get in touch if you would like to play a part in creating this unique record of Brighton and Hove's history.

We're still also at the church every Sunday afternoon from 2.00 - 5.00.
Do join us and, see what we're up to, or have a chat about traditional crafts, local history or solar dyeing.
What do you think about setting up a National Heritage Craft Museum?

THE STANMER YURT
Following on from our activities at Springwatch 2010, we're just about to emark on creating our own felted yurt in Stanmer Park. We will cut our first ash on 28th October - do let me know if you'd like to join us.

DIARY
This is the section of the website where I post a weekly, fortnightly, monthly update.
Like a blog, it's a growing record of the progress of the project.

EAST BRIGHTON SEEN
To see photographs from this exhibition, visit the website: www.bygones.org.uk - the growing online archive run by volunteers from the East Brighton Bygones local history society.
I'm VERY pleased to say that the Stanmer Digital Archive is being created even as we speak.
