George Wombwell Hawson was the eleventh of twelve children born to George Hawson and Julia Garland. He was born in 1866 at the farm at Hooton Roberts near Rotherham and baptised on 27 December 1866 .
After his father's death in 1869, he move with his mother and the younger brothers and sisters to Alma Place in Doncaster. He was living there, still at school, in 1881.
Little is known of his early life, although he spent a number of years in Rotherham, before moving to Armthorpe near Doncaster, where he became a butcher. He had a shop there, together with another at the Shambles in Doncaster market.
He married Alice Bennett, and had three daughters, Julia, Dorothy, and Alice, and two sons, George Frederick and Harold Reginald Wombwell.
George was President of the Doncaster branch of the Butchers Association fro 1923 to 1925 and at one stage was President of the South Yorkshire Butchers Association. His son, George Frederick, followed him in his trade and became a partner in the business.
Whilst living at Armthorpe, he served as a Parish Councillor, was a church warden, and a trustee of the Church Day School. In later years he lived at St Vincent Avenue in Doncaster, where he died at the age of 71. His funeral was held at Armthorpe Parish Church.
