Emma Hawson was baptised at Hooton Roberts on 20 November 1862. When she was 7 her father died, and at some point after that she moved with her mother to Doncaster. In 1881 they were living at Alma Place on Balby Road, Doncaster. Emma was described as a milliner.
On 22 May 1882, living at Bentinck Street, she married Charles Hancock, a labourer of Nelson Street, Doncaster.
They had six known children:
All were born in Doncaster except Bertha, who was born in Brighouse.
In 1901 Emma is living in Headingley-with-Burley in Yorkshire, described as the head of the family, although it is thought that Charles did not die until 1919.
