Fairview Allotments

Welcome to Fairview Allotments Association

Fairview Allotments are situated at the eastern end of Southfield Golf course, bordered by Town Furze (road).

Allotment gardens in the Cowley area of Oxford are identified on maps dating before the foundation of Southfield Golf Club on its present site in the early 1920s. However, the earliest certain identification of allotments in our particular corner of the golf course is the Ordnance Survey map of 1955. This is still a long history! The land is owned by Oxford City Council but leased to Southfield Golf Club (SGC).

Sadly, the site has become neglected in recent years with numbers of occupants falling to 9 in 2006. In part, this was because the site was unnamed and not identified by Oxford City Council so it was almost impossible for potential allotees to find it!

In 2007, thanks to the efforts of many individuals, including officers at Oxford City Council and Southfield Golf Club

  • Fairview Allotments was given a name
  • Fairview Allotments Association (FAA) was formed
  • The first AGM was held (hosted by SGC) a Constitution was accepted and new committee elected
  • Fairview allotments were identified on the Oxford City Council map, with
    contact details provided
  • The number of plot-holders has increased from 9 to 21

Fairview Allotments will not attract those who like neat rows of plots each of the standard 302.5 square yards. Fairview plots are all different sizes and laid out as dictated by the surrounding terrain and vegetation. It is much more like a nature reserve than a standard allotment site; it is the intention of the “founding members” to preserve the character of the site whilst doing all we can to increase its productivity.
