 The Tree Original: £230 “He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed.” (1 Peter 2:24) This painting is my rather oblique way of addressing the crucifixion. The website version isn't wonderfully clear – in the prints you can see the anthropomorphic tendencies of the tree a lot better, hinting at the shape of the suffering body of Jesus on the cross. Another important element which doesn't come out too clearly on screen is the tiny green buds on the ends of the branches, suggestive of new life and hope – the resurrection and the new life Jesus offers to everyone. The poetry that features in the picture comes from Song of Songs 8:6-7.
