If you are interested in joining Spinnaker,
the first thing to say is: good choice!
Getting involved in barbershop is a decision,
we have never known anyone to regret.
Whether you are an experienced singer or
not, a capable musician or not, we
would love to meet you. On our contact us page, and on our find us page, there are
details of where we are and how to contact
us. If you just want to turn up on a Wednesday
night, that's just fine. You can sit and
listen, or join in for part of the evening;
whatever you feel comfortable doing.
The first time you come and see us, we hope
we make you feel very welcome. We are ever
such a friendly bunch, and that's true of
all barbershop groups, the world over.
If you want to have a go at singing during
the evening, one of the first things we will
do is
place your voice. All this means is that the Director or
one of his assistants will have a
listen to you singing and suggest which part
is best for you to join.
There is more information about the 4-parts
in barbershop harmony here.
We will ask you to sing "happy birthday" or another simple song you know, and
some scales so we can see where your vocal
range is.
How fast you want to get involved is really
up to you,
if you want to keep coming along for a few
weeks and see how you feel about
the chorus, that's fine. Ask any questions
you like and we will tell you all about what
is involved.
We may even have the answer for you here
in this list of frequently asked questions.
Otherwise, when you know you want to join
us, tell us, and we will talk about auditioning.
The idea may fill you with horror, but you
will not be surprised that we have
an audition to see that you have the ability
to sing with Spinnaker.
Our audition is quite straightforward and
nothing to be worried about. Here is a
letter we will give you when you have expressed
an interest in joining us, which
explains the procedure.
