MIKE TABRETT
I began learning T'ai Chi in 1983 and quickly became fascinated by the art. I had no previous background in anything similar, but went on to look at many different arts covering all aspects of the T'ai Chi system; healing, meditation and martial. I have continued to try to maintain a balance between all of these, believing that they complement and strengthen each other. My original style was Yang family T'ai Chi but recently I have begun studying the older Chen style. In addition I make use of a variety of Chi Kung exercises. I take great pleasure in the weapons used in the T'ai Chi system. I enjoy teaching in a variety of different circumstances outside of traditional formats. In particular I run stress management courses using T'ai Chi principles ( see ` Moving Through Stress and Conflict') and work with people with a wide variety of special health needs.
The latter has led to my involvement with the steering group of the `T'ai Chi and Chi Kung Forum for Health' an organisation drawing on a wide variety of experiences to develop training and research in this field. I am a former Chair and founder member of the Forum and regularly teach on its training courses. For more information see the page on `T'ai Chi Health and Special Needs' on this website and the Forum's own website at www.taichiforum.co.uk
As well as my T'ai Chi practice I am qualified to practice Tu'i Na, a system of massage and acupressure founded in the tradition of Chinese medicine and often teach elements of this alongside T'ai Chi and Chi Kung.
I am training in JKD and the Filipino Martial Arts with teachers from the 'Cambridge Academy of Martial Arts', with whom I am assistant tutor and Grandmaster Danny Guba of the Doce Pares system.
In the past I have spent time learning arts like Shiatsu, intuitive massage, Karate, Ai Ki Do, Buddhist meditation and Yoga though I claim no expertise in any of these areas, each one has offered insights in to my own practice.
My teaching includes the traditional forms and exercises, stress management and specialist classes for people with particular needs and abilities. I am registered as a teacher with the T'ai Chi Union for Great Britain (T.C.U.G.B.), a multi-style umbrella organisation. I like to teach the basic forms and postures to enable people to develop their own understanding of the arts.
These basics can be used by the individual in whichever direction is appropriate to their needs and interests. At intermediate level these basics can be developed, and it is here that the martial aspect is more emphasised: although I do not regard myself as a 'fighter', I do practice T'ai Chi as a Martial Art as I feel that the martial aspect of the arts provide the door through which the higher levels of the practice are accessed.
Before teaching T'ai Chi professionally I have worked as a gardener, a storekeeper and as a Playworker. I have been involved in the development and management of a Housing Co-op. All of these have provided rich experience that has complemented my T'ai Chi practice.
