A stringed instrument player since the age of 8, with a gifted ability to play by ear, Bassie took up electric bass at 23, often preferring lead bass play, than to accept just the conventional 'underpinning' role of the bass. In 2006 and 2007, Bassie played seventy-five four to five hour improvised live sets with dj Naph-Tali at Exit in Brick Lane. Typically, these Friday nights were an 'in the moment' journey through Fela Kuti, Marley, Roy Ayers, Goldie, RH Factor, Mr Scruff, Photek, Subject 13, North of Ping Pong, KV5 and other esoteric grooves. During this period, this unique and unlikely partnership of dj and bass player gained much respect from music loving crowds, with some powerful improvised performances based on anticipation, intuition and an understanding of groove-based music. For 2009, Bassie will be pushing further at the boundaries of freestyle bass, seeing completion of a 7-string bass build and short circuit road racing on a Yamaha YZF-R1. |
