Qualifications: BA(Hons) Geography, Exeter University; Diploma in Town Planning, studied as part-time postgraduate while working as a planner in Essex.
Previously in planning practice in South East England, and Senior Lecturer at South Bank Polytechnic, London. Appointments as Visiting Professor to University of Nigeria in 1984, and University of Delaware in 1988; specialist subject assessor in Town and Country Planning & Landscape by the Higher Education Funding Council for England, 1996-98.
Recent publications and research include reports to Scottish Office on Planning Appeals (1985) and the Use Classes Order (1994), as well as conference papers on sustainable development and deregulation in planning.
Teaching and thesis supervision interests: sustainable development, statutory planning - policy, plans and control. Long-term applied interest in equal opportunities.
Outside interests include association with RTPI Branch activity, a Planning Educational Trust, family pursuits, gardening and travel.
