The Department is the only planning school in the west of Scotland which is accredited by the Royal Town Planning Institute and is the highest ranked planning school in Scotland. It has nine full-time academic staff, three research assistants and four support staff. Its mission is to become the centre of excellence for environmental planning education, teaching and learning and research in Scotland, and a leading British planning school with an international reputation in planning research. The main teaching interests are environmental and statutory land use planning, local economic development, urban regeneration, property and urban development, and sustainable development. There are five students undertaking PhD research in related areas. Research income averages about £150k pa with roughly half coming from local government and half from research charities and trusts.
