The Department welcomes applications from students in the UK or overseas for full or part-time postgraduate research degrees. Departmental research specialisms cover the fields of local economic development, area regeneration, community development, environmental planning and statutory planning Research on applied issues and planning policy ranges from the UK, Europe, selected countries in America, Asia and Africa. Located in the centre of Glasgow, the University of Strathclyde is ideally situated for applied policy research on many aspects of the environment, planning and development.

The Department regularly and successfully nominates strong candidates for research studentships funded by external bodies such as the ESRC and overseas institutions. The University also offers a number of postgraduate studentships each year. The Department welcomes applications from students with a strong academic record.

• The Department provides excellent research training for students.
• The Department satisfies the Economic and Social Research Council's Postgraduate Training Guidelines and can, therefore, accept ESRC-funded students who have no previous postgraduate training.
• Research facilities, computers and library facilities within the University, the Faculty and the Department are excellent and office space is available for every student.
• The Department follows the Faculty Code for the supervision of doctoral students which ensures high quality supervision.
• Researchers are encouraged to participate in the Faculty's doctoral programme on Research Methods, which also offers practical assistance with research design.
• The Department runs regular workshops for research students to present and discuss their work.
• Research students can attend any of the Department's postgraduate planning courses
