Research is a central activity of the Department, including both training
for higher research degrees and contract research.
The main areas of expertise among staff include local economic development,
environmental planning, statutory land-use planning, urban and regional planning,
urban regeneration and public policy. Geographical areas of interest include
the UK, Europe, the Middle-East, North America and China. The Department places
a strong emphasis on applied and policy-oriented research. It maintains close
links with local and regional planning and development agencies throughout Scotland
and the UK.
There are normally about six full-time and three part-time researchers registered
for PhDs or MPhils by research in the Department. Four or five people complete
successfully each year, reflecting the high priority attached to good supervision
and progress monitoring.
Recent research degree topics include housing policy in China, partnerships
in urban regeneration, environmental assessment, French planning, and conserving
historic neighbourhoods.
Research degrees may include advanced coursework by special arrangement. Research
students participate in regular research seminars of the Department and in a
Faculty-wide doctoral programme in research methods. The Department has dedicated
facilities for researchers, including office accommodation, computers, photocopying,
a library information room and map collection.
The Department has successfully nominated applicants for University of Strathclyde Postgraduate Scholarships.
