Recent 136kHz Activity
QTH Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire (IO91VT)

For a detailed explanation of modes such as QRSS and DFCW, see ON7YD's site.
QRSS/DFCW reports are: 'O' = good signal; 'M' = poor but readable; 'T' = unreadable.
Intercontinental DX info is archived here

The Log
(newest data first - most old info not archived, but see Gallery and Transcontinental section. All times & dates UTC):

26 Dec 06: Contact with DJ5AO using QRSS3, exchanged 'O' reports. Received PA4VHF (QRSS3, 'O').

Sun 24 Dec 2006: Received G3XIZ (DFCW, 'O'), F6BWO (QRSS3, 'O'), F6CWA (QRSS3, 'O'), PA3CNY (QRSS3, 'O') and DL2HRE (DFCW, 'O'). Called CQ using QRSS3 and QRSS10, but no reply.

Sun 17 Dec 06: Received PA4VHF (DFCW, 'O'), OK2BVG (DFCW, 'O'),

Sat 16 Dec 06: Received G3XIZ (DFCW, 'O') and OK2BVG (DFCW, 'O').

10 Dec 06: Received G3XIZ (DFCW, 'O'), PA4VHF (DFCW, 'O'), DL2HRE (DFCW, 'O'), DJ5AO (QRSS3, 'O'), F6BWO (QRSS3, 'O'). Contact with OK2BVG, exchanging 'O' reports.

Sat 9 Dec 06: Received DL2HRE (DFCW, 'O'), PA3CPM (QRSS3, 'O'), F6BWO (QRSS3, 'O'), OK2BVG (DFCW, 'M'). Contact with DJ6GT, exchanged 'O' reports but I eventually lost him in the noise.

Fri 8 Dec 06: Received DL2HRE (DFCW3, 'O'). Called CQ using QRSS3 but no reply.

Sun 26 Nov 06: Received DK7SU (QRSS3, 'O'), G3XIZ (DFCW3, 'O'), F6CWA (QRSS3, 'O'), DL2HRE ('O'). Called CQ using QRSS3 but no reply.

Sat 25 Nov 06: Called CQ using QRSS3, but no reply.

Fri 24 Nov 06: Received F6CWA (QRSS3, 'M'). Bad QRN.

Sun 19 Nov 06: Received F6BWO (QRSS3, 'O'). Called CQ using QRSS3 but no reply. Worked F6BWO using CW but lost him because of QRM from the sidebands of the Rugby Loran on 100kHz. CW is very difficult indeed because of Loran.

Sat 18 Nov 06: Received PA3FNY ('O'), F6BWO ('O'), S57A ('O'), DL2HRE (DFCW, 'O'). Worked OK2BVG on QRSS3 (exchanged 'O' reports) and DK4U who gave my QRSS3 transmission an 'O' report (audible at S5) and I have his Hellschreiber signal 'O' and audible S4. Monitored overnight (18/19 Nov) for DX signals and received UA4WPF (QRSS30, 'O'), and USA experimental amateur beacons 'XGJ' (QRSS60), XES (DFCW 60) and XNS (DFCW60).

East meets west at about 2200UTC. At the top is K2ORS sending 'XGJ' and below is UA4WPF. Note that the Russian is using half the dot length.

At 0630, just before UK dawn, three US beacons appear together. Note that the middle one is 'XES' using dual-frequency CW (dash the same length as dot but offset in frequency - higher on the picture) but it suffers with very bad fading so that the first 'X' is almost invisible, as is the last dash of the next 'X'.

Fri 17 Nov 06: Received UA4WPF (QRSS30, 'O').

Thu 16 Nov 06: Received DL2HRE (DFCW, 'O'). Called CQ using QRSS3 but no reply.

Wed 15 Nov 06: Increased Tx power with additional Decca PA unit. Now about 800W DC in to give under 200mW ERP. Received DL2HRE (DFCW, 'M'), RA3YO (DFCW, 'M'). Called CQ using QRSS3, but no reply. Monitored overnight (15/16 Nov) and received XGJ (K2ORS) - see below.

RA3YO's Dual-frequency CW with 30 second dot period.

K2ORS's beacon XGJ using 60 second dot period. Pic show the end of one call and the start of the next received at 0100UTC.

Sun 8 Oct 06: Received DL4EAU (DFCW. 'O'), DL2HRE (DFCW, 'O'), G3WCB (DFCW, 'O'), PA4VHF (DFCW, 'O'), MB2HFC (DFCW, 'O') and PA3CPM (QRSS3, 'O').

Sat 7 Oct 06: Received G3XIZ (CW, 599), G3KEV (CW, 589), F6BWO (QRSS3, 'O'), DL2HRE (DFCW, 'O'), MB2HFC (RSGB HF Convention, CW, 599 and DFCW, 'O'), G3AQC (CW, 599), DL4EAU (QRSS3, 'O'), G3YXM (CW, 599) and DK4U (Hell, 'O'). Worked MB2HFC on CW (599/599) and DK7SU on QRSS3 (gave me 'M', gave him 'O') for new station number 115.

Sun 1 Oct 06: The long-awaited Luxemburg expedition, LX/PA6Z, was active on QRSS3, and audible at 539. Had a QSO with them and exchanged 'O' reports, despite the static. That made country number 24 for me on 136kHz, and unique call number 114 (see list).

LX/PA6Z replying to my call. The fuzziness is caused by my receiver's AGC being triggered by the heavy QRN.

A rather clearer CQ from LX/PA6Z ('dashes' at the top, 'dots' at the bottom) as the QRN reduced.

Also received PA3FNY (DFCW, 'O'), DK4U (DFCW and Hell, 'O'), G3XIZ (DFCW, 'O'), M0BMU (DFCW, 'O') and F6BWO (QRSS, 'O').
