In 1941 (ACI 2594 dated 27 December 1941) it was decided in order to conserve metal, that cap badges would where possible be produced in plastic. Some cap badges were deemed unsuitable for this process. The ACI went on to say that plastic and metal cap badges were allowed to be worn concurrently within any one unit, and that Quartermasters were not to indent for plastic badges ‘in bulk’ merely to ensure uniformity.

483,386 RAOC Bakalite badges were produced between 21/03/1942 & 05/09/1945 by two Makers:
173,296 by MentMore Manufacturing Co Ltd (MMMC) & 310,090 by Fraser & Glass (F & G)
A small number of these badges have been seen with no makers mark, manufacture unknown.

Plastic cap badges continued to be worn after the war in some units, when in working dress

Locally Manufactured, Cast Cap Badges
Other-ranks & Officers versions

Meanwhile in the Middle East, due to shortages of supply, locally manufactured cap badges, invariably cast in brass were being produced in Egypt and India, and authorised for service use. (Some bear a manufactures mark, but many do not) These should not be classed as ‘poor re-productions’ as they were produced by official RAOC order (Not just for the RAOC but for most Regiments and Corps in the theatre of operations) and can be found with both Lugs and Sliders.

Stores such as cap badges being heavy in bulk, were given low priority when planning shipping space in wartime.

The Blackened version being offered for sale in RAOC Garrison Officers shops.
