WEB Sites:-

There are also a number of web sites that I have found both very informative and interesting:-

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission Provides details of all the men of the commonwealth who died in the 1st and 2nd World War - Invaluable.

The British Army in the Great War If you need to find out about the British Army in the Great War - this should be your first point of call. Also provides an overview of how to find information on an individual soldier.

Cheadle and Gatley War Memorials John Hartley has researched his local memorials around Cheadle and Gatley and has produced an extremely interesting and informative site for all those interested in Cheshire's role in the Great War. John has also contributed a fantastic article to Tom Morgan's "Hellfire Corner" about his Grandfather, Thomas Brough of the 17th Manchester Regiment.

Books:

Soldiers Died in the Great War 1914-19; Part 49. The Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment). Published by J. B. Haywood & Son, Suffolk, 1989. Somewhat superseded by the 'Soldiers Died' CD

British Battalions on the Somme by Ray Westlake. Published by Leo Cooper, 1998. A great reference for battalion movements

The 6th Battalion Sherwood Foresters in the 1914-18 War, by Captain W.D. Jamieson, Privately Published in 1958. Very Hard to find copies, the 2/6th History is even rarer !

Brave Sons of Shirebrook by Trevor Skirrey. Published by Derbyshire County Council, Libraries and Heritage Department, 2000. Available locally around Chesterfield

Archives:

The Public Record Office If you need to find something out - it'll be here

The Local Studies Section at the Chesterfield Library. A unique resource for finding out about local men - they have the Derbyshire Times on microfilm as well as numerous photographs.
