RSOL Version 2

As you can see, I have been busy lately in redesigning the site.  I have tried to keep the new look RSOL as 'user friendly' as possible.  The emphasis has been to try to keep download times to a minimum.  As a result, some of the 'bells and whistles' that were included in the old site have been removed.  The hit counter, flash buttons and some of the  Java script routines have all been consigned to the dustbin.

The new site incorporates my own buttons, banner and graphics design features.  The index page is simply a quick loading links page which allows the user to navigate straight to the desired page and does not assume the homepage as the required destination.

The Members page is now in alphabetical order on selectable pages, thus making it easier to search - where provided, the names have been hyper linked with the relevant email addresses.  The most recent new members names now also appear in the side bar.

JobOps Page

I am still trying to get contributors for this page - if you know of anyone who would be interested in advertising vacancies here please let me know.  I will be applying to the RSS to see if they will allow me to reproduce snippets from the Royal Signals newsletter, as this is a good source of employment contacts.

Your Input

The site will only work with your input, so please feel free to email me at any time as to anything at all that you would like to see or contribute to RSOL.  I have already been offered some old pictures of my wedding by one member, however I think I may have to pass on that one as I need to keep members - not get rid of them..!

You may wish to advertise your companies services and/or job opportunities directly onto these pages - simply let me have the details and I will make sure that they appear here.

Passwords

In order to retain the integrity of the RSOL Message Board, passwords will only remain valid for a limited period of time, and will then be updated.  If you have joined RSOL, but have yet to register on the message board you may find that your password has expired.  If this is the case, please do not re-register for RSOL, simply email me and I will forward a new valid password.

Picture Library

I am more than willing to start some sort of picture library - however I will only accept pictures that are legible.  Too many sites suffer from publishing pictures which in truth are not legible, and therefore loose any meaning.  But if you've got them, and you want them published, send me the pictures and any short explanation about them, and I will do the rest.

Pop Ups - Damn Annoying Ain't They!

It has been highlighted that the Pop Up situation on the Message Board can be, how shall we say, a little annoying!  I have to agree with this, however as I pointed out to the publisher, this unfortunately is the price I have to pay for using third party (free!) Web space and utilities.  I am hoping that I can get the main pages onto some 'ad free' web space soon, thus alleviating the problem with the main pages.

In order to stop the pop ups when using the the Message Board (and Guest book... hint!), try using the following 'Pop Up Stopper'.  Its available for download free at http://www.panicware.com/product_downloads.html and appears to work very well.  After installation, it puts a small toolbar onto your Internet Explorer which requires little or no configuration, and also has some other useful features.  It should prove useful when visiting all sites, not only this one.

I have noticed a few limitations to the 'stopper', for instance, it will also stop you voting on the 'On Line' Polls.  However because the stopper can be activated & deactivated by a simple mouse click on one of the icons on your browser it is simple to deactivate it while voting and then immediately reactivate it again.

Many thanks to Dave Middleton for the recommendation of this software.

RSOL Instant Messaging Group

I am not against IM's.  The only problem with them is that there are so many around and nobody seems to use the same one* (especially if you are catering for a fairly large community).  However if there is call set up an IM group using a specific messenger, I will consider it.

*For those users who wish to 'combine IMs' - check out 'Trillian'.  Single interface for multiple IM applications.  You can download it at:  http://www.trillian.cc/
