Mick Rawle is a qualified Adult Education Teacher and Professional Genealogist

who has been teaching these courses since 1999.

 

Three courses are available :

Stage 1 F H Course - for beginners or those with limited knowledge of Family History sources

Genealogy on the Internet - for those wanting to get the best out of the internet websites

Stage 2 F H Course - for the more advanced wanting to know what else is available and where

 

Stage 1 Family History Course

 

These courses are for the absolute beginner as well as for people who have done some Family History research but need to fully understand what is available and how to use it.    You will be surprised by the things that you thought you knew, but you will be given the professional short cuts and extra knowledge to help find those elusive ancestors

10 lessons of two hours per lesson

    Where and How to start  :  General Registration - Births, Marriages and Deaths

    Census Returns  :  Parish Registers  :  the IGI

    Using microfiche readers

    Tour round the LRFHS Research Centre & a chance to do your own research

    Wills, Administrations and Inventories

    Other sources of information - Records Offices and Books

    How to collect your information and turn it into a Family History

     Using Computers & the Internet for Family History Research

Genealogy on the Internet

 

This is for those of you who want to be able to use websites to their fullest extent - many tips on how to get the best out of some of the most useful Genealogy Websites on the internet.  Everyone who has come on this course has said how much more they can do now on each of the websites that have been explained.

10 sessions

Explanation and use of Data CDs        Commercial websites explored

National & County Records Offices & Family History Society websites

FamilySearch - 1881 Census & IGI      Ancestry      FreeBMD    Cyndislist

Findmypast including the 1911 Census    UKBMD   and many more sites explained

 

After the first lesson, bring your own research

and let Mick help you find those missing ancestors.

 

Stage 2 Family History Course

 

This is for those of you who have done a fair amount of research and are perhaps stuck,

or want to know more about other sources of information - trips to a CRO and The

National Archives (TNA) are available during this course, but the TNA trip will cost extra.

from 6.30 - 8.30 pm

Continuing FH Course Syllabus

10 lessons of two hours per lesson

Subjects covered include the following :-

    Recap on all the records mentioned in the Beginner's Course

    Maps and their uses            Poor Law Documents

    Visit to Leicester Records Office            Constructing a Family Tree from Wills

    Military Records                   Family History 1500 - 1800

    Court Records - Quarter Sessions, Criminals, Transportation & Assizes

    Visit the National Archives (TNA) at Kew, London

    Other sources    -      Newspapers      :      Fire & Police services      :      Taxes :

    Protestation Returns etc. etc.

                Cost of the London trip to the National Archives is in addition to the course fee.   The cost depends on the charges made by the LRFHS because we go on the LRFHS Bus trips to Kew.  

Cost in 2009 is £15.00 payable to the LRFHS
