A Century of Singing About the Society

Lincoln Choral Society is a ninety-strong mixed choir.
Most of our concerts are given in the magnificent setting of Lincoln Cathedral.

We are fortunate to have Neville Turner as our Musical director, and Greg Wright as our Deputy Musical Director. Our Rehearsal Accompanist is Carol Lea.

The Society was formed in 1896 as The Lincoln Musical Society. The first concert was on Tuesday December 8th 1896 in the Corn Exchange. Tickets cost 4s (20p), 2s and 1s! The programme included Mendelssohn's "Athalie" and a miscellany of songs, choruses and a recitation.
The Musical Society changed its name to Lincoln Choral Society in 1987, as the new name was thought to be a better description of our activities.

For our Centenary Concert in November 1996, we commissioned a Cantata from Dr Philip Marshall (formerly Organist at Lincoln Cathedral, and Musical Director of the Society).
We have also given first perfomances of smaller scale works by Patrick Bennett (former Deputy Musical Director and Repetiteur of the Society).

We aim to continue to be a happy Choral Society, where friendship and a mutual love of choral music binds us together into a successful organisation where musical excellence is the ultimate goal. We aim to give our audience high quality and enjoyable choral music which extends their repertoire and ours, offering diversity of experience to choir and audience and enriching the cultural life of the community.

We present two major concerts most years and smaller ones at Christmas and in the summer, at prices which are affordable to our audience, and financially viable for us to sustain our funds and remain self-sufficient. In the last few years, we have taken part in concerts in aid of the Army Benevolent Fund and also the Rotary Club's "1000 Voices" charity events.

In 2001 we renewed acquaintence with the Choir of the Liedertafel in Neustadt an der Weinstrasse (Lincoln's twin town in Germany). Members of both choirs have swapped visits for performances of Orff's "Carmina Burana" and Rossini's "Petite Messe Solonelle". Our latest joint venture was Brahms' "Ein Deutsches Requiem" (A German Requiem) in March 2007 in Lincoln and then in October in Neustadt.
