Bowen for Sport
The Bowen Technique
brings balance to the body. It can be
used as a maintenance & prevention treatment or as a curative (post
injury) treatment.
Bowen can form part
of an effective training schedule increasing the body’s endurance,
speeding up the body’s return to homeostasis and enabling faster
recovery from injury.
Taking a holistic
look at the body often unlocks surprising restrictions in unexpected places,
sometimes going back to birth defects.
Eg. a recent patient in her 50s, was
experiencing continual neck and shoulder discomfort. Work on her lower spine unraveled a
blockage in her feet and ankles. She
had been born with Club Feet. She told
me the next day, “My neck is the best it’s been in years”.
As the body realigns
post treatment, proprioception (awareness of the position of one’s
body) can be ‘a little off’, so you may feel a little clumsy for
24-48hours after a Bowen treatment.
Eg. you might notice your golf swing is off
(yes, you can blame the Bowen), or you miss the shuttlecock by a small margin
of error. Because of this, it is
advisable not to have Bowen less than 48hrs before a game, run, cycle
etc. Gentle stretching and a good
walk, nourishment, water replenishment and rest, will support the necessary
adjustments your body is making post treatment. This kindness to the body can help you fulfill
your potential and achieve an optimal performance.
