Al is a board member and volunteer at the Moscow Food Co-Op in Idaho, USA. After leaving school Al joined the US Navy and was on the USS Chilton in Shanghai at the time of the Yangtze Incident. I came across Al's name whilst searching the web for HMS London and contacted the Co-Op who kindly passed-on my original email. Below is Al's reply;

I was stationed aboard the USS Chilton and on several occasions went aboard HMS London, once to a party and several times to a film and on another occasion to help with the Radar which was acting funny. On the morning when she went up river I was on the pilot boat to deliver a Simpson meter to the electrical gang, as their  AVO was acting weird. I did not go aboard that day as she was getting underway ASAP (At the time I didn't know why) Later- the next day or so- when she came back - I volunteered on the M boats to help get the wounded to the Repose (Our Hospital ship).

I played soccer and drank beer with those guys when we were both in Shanghai. I think of them every April; I attended their Funeral and was deeply saddened over what happened.

Al, Shanghai 1949.

A few weeks ago a padded envelope arrived from Moscow, the contents of which you will find on this and the following pages. On behalf of the members of the HMS London 1947 - 49 Association I thank Al and his shipmates for their help and comradeship in China, over 50 years ago.
