SUNCARE
Always limit your exposure to the sun at the beginning of a holiday. Also stay out of the midday sun. When buying your sun creams choose one that filters both UVA and UVB rays. UVB rays penetrate the upper layers of the skin and are the main cause of burning and skin cancer. UVA rays are present all year round and penetrate more deeply into your skin, damaging supportive collagen and elastin in your skin so that it sags, wrinkles and ages prematurely. Apply sun cream liberally and keep reapplying, especially if you are in and out of water. Also remember that towel drying and generally getting hot, sticky and moving around can rub off protection.
After care advice
After sunbathing you should always use an after sun lotion, this will help prevent peeling and will replenish moisture lost due to sun exposure.
If you accidentally overdo time spent in the sun, aloe vera gel can help cool things down. You also need to drink plenty of water. You need to rehydrate the whole of your body as well as your skin. Don't go back into the sun until your skin is healed completely and make sure you protect yourself.
Tips for self tanning:
Cleanse and exfoliate skin thoroughly before applying your self tanning lotion to prevent streaking and patching.
Apply lotion a little at a time and blend using vertical and horizontal strokes.
Wash hands and scrub nails immediately after application to prevent staining.
Make sure the lotion has absorbed and dried completely before putting on your clothes.
Be warned self tanning lotions will not protect your skin from the sun.
Self tan comes in different forms i.e. lotions, creams and sprays. Sprays are a lot easier to use and are not so messy.
Tried and tested self-tanners:
"St tropez is the best self tanning product i have used, it was highly recommended from friends.
It does not streak at all. You can get it in a mousse, spray or lotion."
"The mousse is fantastic, non-greasy and chocolate coloured so you can see where you've applied it. It is very quick and easy to use. I usually find mousse fake tans are very hard to apply, but; was simple.
A real tan and go product and it dries in just 60 seconds. It also has no orange effect."
"The st tropez tinted self-tanning lotion is really good, you apply it the night before leave it on all night, then rinse off the next day to uncover a beautiful even tan. You can apply it every night for a deeper tan."
Advantages to self tans:
- You have an all year round tan.
