Rosemary
Ribbons was born on July 22nd 1983 in Australia to Ronald and Carol Ribbons. Her
father is Welsh and in the early 1980s, he travelled to Australia to see his
parents who had emigrated there. Whilst he was there he met Rosie's Australian
mother, Carol. They got married and Rosie was born soon after who spent the
first four years of her life living in Australia. Eventually, the family
returned to Pontardawe near Swansea in Wales to start a new life together. Rosie
decided she wanted to be a pop singer ever since she was eight years old.
"I
was singing a song in my schoolyard when a girl came up and said 'You're
actually quite a good singer'. After that it was all I ever wanted to be -
working in the supermarket was just a means to an end until the right moment
came along. I've got three older sisters and I started listening to their
tapes".
Rosie became almost
obsessed with Mariah Carey and listened to her tapes over and over again and
learned to mimic her way of singing. Rosie was even inspired to start writing
her own songs. She was a reasonably good student at school until her final year
when she conveniently lost interest altogether and the only two GCSEs she passed
was English and Drama!
Before Pop Idol, she
was working in her local branch of Alldays, a small supermarket.. but since then
she's been snapped up by Telstar Records (for
a 5 album deal) and this pint sized talent at just 5ft 2in, is about to
become a huge star!
Her debut single "Blink" reached #12 in the UK charts in
October 2002, the second single "A Little Bit" reached #19 in
January 2003. Her album had many name changes consisting of; "Levitate"
(as per Blink Cd), "Good Thing" and finally "Misbehaving".
After the disappointing
chart position of "A Little Bit" Telstar went to work
on getting ready to release the third single only a few weeks later. This was
initially going to be a double A Side, featuring "Good Thing"
and "Heaven". After supporting Blue on their "One Love"
Tour Telstar decided that a totally fresh, new track had to be released...
something guaranteed to succeed. Rosie was back in the studio recording a modern
day remake of none other than Dee-Lites "Groove Is In The Heart".
Telstar decided this was the way to go, release this new track as the double A
side with Rosie's ballad "Heaven".
The next
step was to get the album out there promotionally, it was sent to the radios and
dj's. By now the moment was lost, interest was low and the album was shelved and
the single. After which her record label dropped her.
Telstar have confirmed
they have no plans to release any of the archived recordings. On an interesting
note... Telstar Records started to undergo bankruptcy proceedings in July 2004
and are no longer trading business. I wonder what happened to the Rosie
archive?
What is she doing now?
Well some people say that her welsh cousin (who posts on a pop idol forum)
claims that Rosie is indeed recording and searching for a label to release her
album. These are most likely rumours, but we can dream.
