Talybont-on-Usk is a small village in the Usk Valley set beside the Brecon and Monmouthshire Canal. It is 6 miles from the market town of Brecon, which has the beautiful mountain of Pen y Fan (the highest in South Wales) as a backdrop.
The village has 4 pubs, a village shop/post office, a playing field and tennis courts. It is a very good centre from which to tour the Brecon Beacons and the Black Mountains. The canal was built in the 1790's and was the main transport route when many goods were carried by horse drawn barges. Today it is only used for pleasure trips, and canal boats can be hired. From Talybont it is a pleasant walk along the towpath to Brecon or towards Abergavenny in the other direction.
The Talybont Reservoir is a beautiful area, and well known for its wildfowl. A short distance beyond the reservoir are the Blaen y Glyn waterfalls with lovely views from above the falls.
The Taff Trail which is a footpath/cycle track from Cardiff to Brecon runs through the village and passes Gethinog. The historic Brynoyre Tram Road which terminated at Talybont-on-Usk is now part of the Taff Trail.
Abergavenny and the Sugar Loaf, Hay on Wye - the well known "book town", the Royal Welsh Showground near Builth Wells, and Llanthony Abbey and the Gospel Pass are all within easy driving distance. Cardiff and Swansea are both about 50 miles away.
Talybont on Usk is situated just off the A40 between Crickhowell and Brecon.
Take the slip road signposted Talybont on Usk about 2 miles after passing through the village of Bwlch. The slip road will take you down over the River Usk. Carry on along this road until you come to the end and turn right. Go straight through the village of Talybont and out the other side until you come to some pink cottages on your left. Turn left - signposted Talybont Reservoir (by the War Memorial). Turn right at the first turning (about 200 yards) and then turn immediately right again into our car park. Gethinog is the white house just up the lane.
