GENERAL

Roundhay Tennis Club is a well established club offering a friendly tennis environment for players of all ages, standards and abilities.  Facilities for wheelchair tennis are available.

We have 6 excellent floodlit tennis courts - all carpeted - and a purpose built clubhouse.  We have a large junior membership providing social tennis and team tennis for the more competitive.  There is coaching for those wishing to improve.  We have regular tournaments and social events; new members are always encouraged to join in.  Roundhay is unquestionably a successful and friendly club with over 130 adult members and 200+ junior members.

Juniors are welcome and encouraged to play at any time courts are available and have priority on the courts on Saturday morning and Sunday evening.  Coaching is offered for juniors by our coach and willing volunteers.  Two weeks of free coaching are included in the membership and continued coaching is offered at £1 a session.  Coaching is generally on Saturday morning and Friday evening, although our coach also offers smaller group coaching on weekday evenings.  We have three junior teams in a local league and organise junior tournaments.  We also host Leeds Tournaments.

Seniors can arrange to play at any time - please see Court Schedules below.  New members are always encouraged to join in and to participate in social, competitive or team tennis, as they wish.

There is a floodlight meter charge of £1.25 (tokens required) for 30 minutes playing time.  A 50p playing charge for tennis balls is made on Sunday and Wednesday mornings in the winter months.

Click on map to find out where we are.

For many years Roger Webster organised the Club Tournaments.  He still provides a re-stringing service for members.  Use the back arrow in your browser to return here if you click on this link to his website.

HISTORY OF THE CLUB

The Roundhay Tennis Club was founded in 1946 and became The Roundhay Lawn Tennis Club (Limited by Guarantee) in 1952.   A full historical record can be found by clicking here.

The most recent improvements have been facilitated by a successful Lottery Grant application.  A couple of pictures of the official opening of the new courts and clubhouse in 2002 are viewable by clicking on the link.

Many members have served the club tirelessly over the years but none more so than Arthur Kasher - the link takes you to a photo of him taken in 2005 when receiving a prestigious award in Leeds.  Grounds committee/working parties/junior coaching/committee work/social events/adapting the new clubhouse to our needs - you name it and Arthur has been the linchpin of most activities.  In recognition of his services to the club, he was made an Honorary Life Member in 1994.  Other Honorary Life Members are Betty Barratt, Peter Sparling and Colin Wright, Sid Rowe, Jean Lawson, Brian Marshall, Will Murray, Alan Jackson and Ann Voss.  It has become a tradition, twice a year, for older and retired members of the club to get together at a party.   Good fun is had by all and the events are also fund raisers for the club.   Here's an account by Arthur of a previous event

DATA PROTECTION ACT
The club holds detailed membership lists on computer to aid administration and also displays contact information on a noticeboard for the convenience of other members.  If any member has a query about this, they are asked to contact the Treasurer or Secretary.

JUNIORS/COACHING

The club is justifiably proud of its commitment to Juniors.  For many years, Arthur Kasher devoted his Saturday mornings to coaching beginners/improvers.  Many now accomplished players attended his sessions and went on to represent the Club in League tennis.

The club coach is Jonathan Saddler.

Coaching is offered for juniors by Jonathan and willing volunteers.  Two weeks of free coaching are included in the membership and continued coaching is offered at £1 a session.  Coaching is generally on Saturday morning and Friday evening, although Jonathan also offers smaller group coaching on weekday evenings.

Juniors have priority on the courts on Saturday mornings and Sunday evenings.  We have junior teams in the Leeds League and in the Yorkshire Minor League and also organise junior tournaments.  The club hosts Leeds Tournaments.

If enough interest is shown, then Juniors can contribute items for inclusion on their own Junior page.  Follow this link

TOURNAMENTS

Each year there are keenly contested Open and Handicap Tournaments.  Watch the noticeboards for entry details.  Helen Harper has taken over from brother Chris as organiser of these tournaments.

(NB It is the responsibility of entrants to play their games by the date stated for each round.  Failure to do so will generally result in the scratching of both players.  If you encounter difficulties in arranging a match, be sure to contact the named organiser in plenty of time.)

This year's was again a great success raising over £400 to be matched hopefully by a similar amount from "The Halifax".  Great atmosphere, food and Sean even managed to sort the weather - again!   It's definitely become one of the favourite events for all the club members.
Jonathan has taken many photographs which he may post on the Facebook RLTC fan site
.

You had to be at the last Karaoke Quiz Night to know how good it was :-) Some pictures are here but forgive me for not having uploaded any soundclips.
