An octagonal horizontal slate dial in a private collection. Recently restored, it has a new brass gnomon and the engraving re-filled with white enamel.
There is a large 32 point compass rose at the base of the gnomon, marked "NE" "E" "SE" etc.In a ring around the compass rose is engraved "If Sol his radiant rays display I will disclose the hour of the day" and "PATRICK FOX OF CHURCHTOWN ENGRAVER" The chapter ring is marked from 4a.m. to 8p.m. in Arabic numerals with a noon gap to compensate for gnomon thickness. There are four fractional time rings, hours, 30 mins, 15 mins and 5 mins. In a cartouche between 4 a.m. and 8 p.m. "Constructed for William Crouch Esqe Charleville Late 52 D 1829"
There is an Equation of Time in the form of a clockwise "CLOCK FASTER" "CLOCK SLOWER" table and the four seasons are marked between appropriate months "Spring" "Summer" etc. In the eight points of the octagonal plate are carved the individual letters of "E" "Q" "U" "A" "T" "I" "O" "N"
William Crouch was an Attorney in Charleville. Nothing is known (yet) of Patrick Fox of Churchtown.
